kMSt ver. 1.2.456 – Huge System Reorganization & Winter Update Teaser!
The first part of the big Winter update has been released, the system reorganization, and man is it a big one. Tons of things have been changed about MapleStory! There was also a teaser video released which I’ll discuss with you. Read on!

It seems Nexon has high hopes for this Winter break, and looking at the first patch, who can blame them? By the way, sorry for being so late, I’ve been at school all day~
This is the background of the teaser page on the MapleStory homepage. Who could these shadowed characters be? One seems to be holding a sword with wings, while the other has some sort of whip? We could possibly be getting two jobs this update!
Anyways, let’s get right into the patch details! First of all, there are new Random Options for equipment! Equipment will randomly have 1 ~ 4 Random Options when bought or picked up. There are 5 ranks for Random Options, each having better stats than the other. The Random Options will also be increased based on the level of the equipment.
If you create your own equipment using professions or buy them from a shop, there will be a limit on the rank of Random Options you receive. If combining equipment, both must have Random Options for the new item to have it.
Random Options appear as yellow text for regular stats and white text for the special stats that it can add to an item (% boss damage, % total damage, % all stats, and equipment level reduction). The Blue Battle Empress above has its level requirement decreased by 25. This does not affect the stats of its Random Options.
The level 110 Dragon series weapons now drop from regular monsters. In addition, level 90, 100, and 110 equipment have a chance to have their required level increased to up to 40 levels more when dropped by monsters. This will affect their Random Options. They will be more likely to have increased requirements when you hunt monsters with higher levels.
For items level 140 or above, there will now be a Scissors of Karma limit. This means that once you karma your item too many times, it will become untradeable forever. This applies to Platinum Scissors of Karma as well. What kind of change is that…
The drop rate of equipment has been permanently increased by 5 to 10 times its previous rate, depending on the level of the equipment! Magnifying glasses are also no longer required to identify items, you simply use the icon in your inventory (the mesos that it would cost are taken away from you instantly).
One more deck has been added to the Character Card system, for a total of 3 decks. However, you can no longer use the same job card in more than one deck.
Inner Ability has received a small change. Monsters will now drop the Medal of Honor, which will give you 100 ~ 1000 Honor if used. The higher the level of the monster, the higher chance of one dropping. Yay, a way to level up my Honor without going to boring Aswan~
All boss monsters (Zakum, Horntail, Hilla, Pink Bean, Van Leon, Magnus, Arkairum, and Cygnus) will drop Circulators and Medals of Honor now.
The character creation screen has received a huge reorganization! There is now a scroll bar at the bottom for the buttons of each race. On the top is an overview as well as a large picture. I think it looks really nice~ Here are the other jobs:

The status window has been updated! It now shows your damage range up to a maximum of 2,000,000, up from 999,999!
The maximum HP and MP a character can have has been raised from 99,999 to 500,000. The maximum defense a character can have has been raised from 9,999 to 99,999. You can no longer avoid 100% of a monster’s attacks. The maximum avoid rate is 90%.
The damage limit for everyone has been raised from 999,999 to 50,000,000!! What is the point of all those Hyper Skills now?
A new type of cube, the Strange Cube, has been added. It drops from boss monsters and can only be used on Rare or Epic items. This cube works just like other cubes, but it cannot raise a rank past Epic, and can even decrease your item’s rank from Epic to Rare!
Some things about items were changed as well. Prices for equipment in stores have been decreased, and the price to repair durability has been decreased has well.
All bosses have received a huge reorganization! First of all, when fighting them with other people, you will no longer see other’s damage or skill effects. Secondly, rushing skills no longer affect boss monsters. Finally, all of their experience given have been decreased by a lot. You’ll really only want to boss now if you want the items that they drop, because they’re terrible for training.
Magnus
- HP has been increased
- Normal to 8.4b HP
- Hard to 252b HP
- Death count system has been increased from 20 deaths to 40
- Attack delay has been adjusted
- Effects and delays have been made easier to see
Empress Cygnus
- Clear limit has been changed to 2 times per week
- There is no limit on how many times you can enter per week. However, if you defeat even one of the V2 Chief Knights, it counts as one clear
- An expedition is no longer required to enter
- Time limit has been decreased from 60 to 30 minutes
- Empress Cygnus and her summons’ HP have been increased
- Empress Cygnus from 2.1b to 210b
- Shinsoo from 70m to 8.4b
- V1 Chief Knights from 600m to 12.6b
- V2 Chief Knights from 1.65b to 21b
- Experience has been decreased
- Empress Cygnus does not heal anymore
- Empress Cygnus is no longer invulnerable when she summons the Chief Knights
- You must defeat all the Chief Knights before defeating Empress Cygnus
- The time when the V2s are summoned has been changed
- Some of her skill effects have been lengthened and some of her skills’ damage have been changed
Arkairum
- Arkairum and his summons’ HP have been increased
- Arkarium from 2.1b to 31.5b
- Priests from 5m to 500m
- Physical attacks will now work on Arkairum’s summons
- Arkairum’s skill delays have been adjusted
Pink Bean
- Regular and Chaos mode’s HP have been increased
- Regular and Chaos from 2.1b to 10.5b
- Time limit has been decreased from 60 to 30 minutes
- Pink Bean’s attack delays have been adjusted
- A new boss skill has been added
Hilla
- Normal and Hard mode’s HP as well as her summons’ HP have been increased
- Normal from 315m to 700m
- Hard from 2.1b to 42b
- Hilla’s attack delays have been adjusted
- The characteristics of some her attacks have been changed
Van Leon
- Van Leon and his summons’ HP have been increased
- Van Leon from 550m to 10.5b
- Van Leon’s attack delays have been adjusted
- Some of his summoned monsters do a fixed percentage of damage to characters
- The characteristics of some his attacks have been changed
- Time limit has been decreased from 60 to 30 minutes
Horntail
- Chaos Horntail and his summons’ HP have been increased
- Horntail’s attack delays have been adjusted
- Summoned monsters are now aggressive and instantly attack you
- The characteristics of some of his attacks have been changed
Zakum
- Chaos Zakum and his summons’ HP have been increased
- Summoned monsters are now aggressive and instantly attack you
- The characteristics of some of his attacks have been changed
A new entry in Inkwell’s Diary, Inkwell’s Letter, has been released! It says that hunting will become more fun, characters will be stronger, and monsters and items will balance adjustments. Also, the update will be revealed to all on November 29, look forward to it!

Well, they are marketing geniuses, basicly people tried quitting but most of them failed… ( including me ) So what ever they’re doing are attracting more people to play rather than quitting.

I can see the random option for Fearless weapons being 50+ atk/matk.
I can also see + boss/ total damage on all equipment.
Finally, I can see many players getting to 2m attack range.
Might liven KMS up a bit. Pretty boring nowadays, just grinding on 2x events and getting to 200.

What I mean is, this requires a lot of funding to get close to damage cap on Siege Mode or Ishtar’s Ring. Maybe there’s going to be a mass buff for all classes….
Maybe they don’t want certain skills to reach the damage cap. Even with a maxed range, those certain skills probably wouldn’t even get close to 50mil. But I think you’re right with the mass buff. Hyper skills damage cap might go beyond 50mil.

For Some Reason, I doubt it… 5th Job will be too OP, unless all jobs are moved up, and its placed somewhere between them (between 3rd and 4th?). What I’m thinking is that there’s going to be a reorganization of all the classes (seems to happen every winter, the pirate and theif revamp, then warrior, archer, and magician, then resistance)
Saying 5th job will be too OP makes no sense at all…
The fourth Job skills cause tons of lag. If there was a fifth job, they’d probably have to move the ultimate to 5th job, and some other skills, giving us horrible fillers.

I think you should look closely. His other arm is obviously holding the weapon. It is a whip. If i think about all the possible skills Nexon can think up of with a whip, i doubt the job is gonna be OP. The only way to OP them is if their % on the skills are ridiculous.
The one on the left looks like another warrior. If i have to say something about warriors, they are always OP these days. Back then warriors are pretty much close range with a max attack range of like 2 inches, but now the warriors are not even considered warriors…. The warrior these days has HP/Def like warriors but has mage skills now. I bet this warrior is gonna be OP.
I’ll bet you 10:1 that “whip” is the energy sword that is described in automata’s skill descriptions.
I think you should look closely. In his hand there is clearly an outline of a dagger-shaed weapon. I wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say that the EN radiates from that ‘blade’ (Like Gundam Epyon)

Most likely though? It’s a dagger, but that trail of glow isn’t from the weapon if it’s a dagger. Because if it’s not a whip, he may have something on his feet that create that glow. LOL, wheels that leave a trail of light or something odd like that. Some new thing to make a character flashy and unique without making them have something super special that would make them more of a Hero and not a time limited character like Cannoneer, DS, DB, Mihile, and Jett.

I bet you that all the new characters that are being made with no decent will just quit. There is no point in this game now that you require all these funding just to take out a boss. If they are gonna buff up the bosses, might as well make the drop like 100x faster than regular monsters. I swear. If they make Mano have like 1million Hp for a level 20 boss, I bet you ,all the beginners/noobs new to MS will quit in a few hours/days. I believe this change is unnecessary and is just telling us to buy NX to play the game now. Where is their policy of “Free Online Game” now? With this change this is just making it more of a non-free game.
I know people says “Pay to win” but that is not true. Paying is only to make the game easier and make yourself stronger but it doesn’t say you need it to win. Some people can do decent damage without even paying for the game.

If no one paid real money you wouldn’t get crap done. If you’re not paying real money you are hacking. If you are not hacking then you are paying someone mesos who has paid real money. If you are not paying someone mesos who has paid real money you are paying a hacker mesos. Everyone who is anything has benefited from people who either use NX or hack. Whether it be your gear, boss runs, training, or them purchasing something from you. You get that edge from them. Otherwise, you would have 20 man expeditions still existing today but that just isn’t so. This game is play to win and has been since Big Bang. Which was the sound of their bank accounts filling up.

You know, you have the option to bring your friends to a boss run ya know. The damage cap has increased to 50 million, allowing many old funded classes to deal good damage. Of course, a boss run now seems impossible without bringing a funded player.

If so, its probably going to be revamped, and the mines are going to be put back to happiness and rainbows… I just cant see job advancing with no Black Wings…… anyway, too early to presume this, but if so, Wonny will be Happy.
I’m sure that they’re just comparing this update to other historical events that happened on the same date. I don’t think it has to do with what will happen in game.

I don’t really care about the system changes, I just want to know what the classes are.
I would guess that the one with the wings is Automata because he has wings akin to Demon Slayer’s and the fact that it doesn’t have horns means it’s not novan. Also the sword is clear and Automata uses an energy sword and there’s speculation about him being Demon Slayer’s sibling so it would fit.
Which would mean that the one on the right is something else, which I’m more interested about. I have wished they would have added a whip class for a while, I’m just curious as to what faction this will belong to. I’m not even sure it’s a whip, but that would be cool and I’m not sure what else it would be. Anyway, I’m excited to see what else they’ll be doing.
I have no earthly idea what this Demon Slayer look alike is all about, but I’m leaning towards the “whip” character being Automata. That “whip” looks an awful lot like an energy sword imo. = /

The wings are the boosters.
Turn on the Booster: The booster is turned on for a period of time, allowing you to fly.
The whip is actually a flexible sword, another form of the energy sword.
Sword Flexible (A): Cut down enemies in front of you quickly with your Energy Sword.
Sword Flexible (B): Thrust your Energy Sword forward, dealing critical damage to enemies.
Sword Flexible (C): Jump up, dealing damage to enemies with your Energy Sword. Can be linked to Drag and Drift.
Now I am sure it’s male and female. The extraction only contain Automata’s skills set, right?

Nexon’s way of balancing Angelic Bursters?
Actually saw that coming. Nexon has always had a way of introducing something with one character, and then giving it to others later.
It is still way easier to hit that much damage with Angelic burster compared to other classes so it isn’t exactly balanced.
im not happy ;-; i cant even hit more than 60k on my mercedes hurricane and they level up the hp of every boss monster ;-; i wont be called to any boss run again 😦
Discouraging isn’t it? It’s like they’re making it so that only those so called “godly” people can boss. They should take “average” people into consideration, seeing as we’re like, what, 95% of the population?

My god. The Boss changes are just wack. I hope when this hits GMS, they might take it in their point of view and not really change the bosses so greatly…I can sorta tell in KMS though how everyone is really strong and such.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING, KMS?
Honestly I think this is a change that needed to happen. Bossing was too easy. Zakum used to take the average player a half hour to kill with a group of SIX people in the old days. Killing Horntail was an honor reserved for those who carefully built their character to be strong enough to withstand HT’s attack and taking a huge group was the norm!
After all the crazy updates, players are so OP that killing any boss with a group is nearly obsolete. I’m glad Nexon finally updated bosses back to the old terrors they used to be!

if u zoom in a whole bunch you can see that he is holding a sword, and the whip i think is the energy in the “energy sword”
if u look carefully it looks like the one with the energy/whip/sword thing has roller blades on soo my bet is that that one is automata and the one with wings might be a new boss or perhaps DS’s dad or its might be a representation of like automata’s gear shift thing were his attacks change.

-Assuming- they buff skills/hyper skills to give players more damage % soon, so players are closer to reaching the 50mil damage cap, then I really REALLY do NOT want to see my characters dishing out 8 digit numbers stretching across the screen like it’s normal. The damage output will be ridiculously abnormal. I’m not too pleased so far.
While I do agree bosses need to be more difficult and should be fought in parties…this is just going overboard.

Man… on my bucc my goal was to hit damage cap and i was 100k away from it…. Now its 50mil…..As a normal player im hoping they like double the attack power of our skills so we can atleast keep up with bosses with like 80bil +.
One thing i like about this is that, now that soloing bosses isnt going to be that easy. People actually have to work together now. Overall I hope they experiment well with this patch since its a hugeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee update..
Yeah i think this game will actually be easier because why would they do all of this unless they were gonna super buff everyone, make exp better, or raise the level cap :D. Nexon must be doing two of the things i said or this game is going to get bad lol

the sword one is the “demons slayer brother” which is most likely to be a boss and the one that is somewhat holding a whip will be the thief resistance automata, you’re welcome.
Automata is the one on the right…electric whip and you can see booster exhaust on the feet. no idea what the DS looking this is tho…but he/she/it has trasnparent sword so they are excused from all hate.

This update looks like mostly very bad new to me. It puts bigger bosses well out of reach of 99.99% of players. Only a few of godliest and most active guilds per server will stand a chance of getting enough powerful players together to make successful runs. And that won’t happen too often. And why did they cut the exp of regular zak and ht to 1/10 of original? That’s just plain mean.
I wonder what the Korean players think of this.

The entire update seems pretty stupid. Mobs will continue to be too easy with horrible exp and spawns. Classes will continue to be uneven because some classes are geared towards training while others boss but training is too easy for all classes making the training classes have pointless skills while the bossing classes own. They choose to even the playing field by making bosses 100x stronger and reducing the EXP 10 times over and give them the same drops. So now only the top tier godly people can do jack, that or hackers and training is still boring for everyone else. I get it, can’t make a win:win scenario and win:lose is unfavorable so make it a lose:lose scenario.

So they nerfed bosses to be harder, worthless and to only appeal to cheaters who either bribe their way to victory or use third party programs to gain an unfair advantage. For legits…what the hell is the point of even playing this game anymore?
On the other hand, if characters and items are strong enough to negate the increased difficulty, what the hell is the point of this update if the general (im)balance between cheaters and legits remains relatively the same?
Dragon Ball Z is a good example of why universal powerups, both for characters and enemies, don’t actually have any real effect whatsoever. It’s all just larger numbars and powar levels without any real change in the current (im)balance. The hackers (Androids) and godly funded players (Super Saiyans) will remain on top, while legits (Krillin, Yamcha, Tien and Chiaotzu) who play the old fashioned way and gain strength without cheating…well, if the character buffs leave classes’ relative power levels the same, then little will change for them. If they make characters even stronger, the collective outcry of cheating masochists (who should just go tie up and whip themselves instead of ruining MapleStory for the rest of players) will result in nerfs and more fake difficulty that offset any gains in character strength. If characters are relatively weaker, well, only legits will suffer. Even the Saibamen could probably kick our asses by the time the winter update is over.
It’s disappointing to see a once great game monetizing power creep like this, at the expense of those who used to play it before the cash shop (and the gachapon/potential it monetized) ruined MapleStory forever. Random buffs are not enough to offset the weakness of legitness, as good ones will inevitably become valuable and yet another gap will result between unfundeds and legits.
Not to mention that, in order to hunt the stronger monsters with better weapon buffs, one will need stronger weapons with stronger buffs. Especially bosses, whose items are the very things that would help players defeat them. However, a player strong enough to defeat the new hard mode bosses doesn’t actually need their rewards anymore. The prizes don’t match the power level needed to obtain them, which is completely FUBAR. What the hell is the point?
The random gambling of gachapon, potential and now random options only makes things worse, as the game becomes designed upon the basis that everyone and their mom will be able to obtain the best stuff. This game would be better off if buffs could be acuired and chosen (FOR FREE) like stats and skills, instead of just having to pray that your equipment/potential/options don’t suck. That way the increased difficulty of enemies would make sense, because the assumption would be true. But treating random item buffs as a general buff for everyone is a total logic fail when we’ve been to this rodeo before, and already seen that randomness mostly just buffs the fundeds who buy up and dupe all the best stuff.
The only reasonable gambling was scrolls that could pass or fail. After that, it becomes a horrible crapshoot that will never offset power creep for those that don’t funnel money to Nexon or hack their way to victory. At least not in the NA version that will be getting this update in 6 months.
Le sigh. Just like IRL, the implementation of money in MapleStory, both virtual and real, has made hard work hardly work. First it was meso sellers, now it’s Nexon. It’s no wonder a ton of Maplers miss the good old days, where mesos and hackers were the only game breaking issues to deal with. If currency was taken out of Maple, the game would be better for it.
I’m still looking forward to the new class, though. At least it’ll be fun to watch youtube videos of it.

It’s not that random options themselves are all that bad. It’s just that they combine with all the other “random except for cashfags who can throw money at things until they’re awesome” game mechanics to add insult to injury. While random buffs won’t be that strong, essentially making them trivial for legits, there will undoubtedly be a cash shop item that lets funded cheaters get the best random options, in addition to them also being able to buy items with good options for ridiculous prices in the free market. Ironically, the free market isn’t free, either.
Suffice it to say, my comment comes from the perspective of a grizzled old beta player who hates scrolling, gachapon, potential, inner abilities and random options. With all their randomness combined, the gap between the funded and unfunded has grown infinitely larger than it was before the latter 4 were implemented. And then people mistake new classes for OP just because they see funded player vastly outperforming their older classes, which also annoys me to no end.
But I’m still holding out a slight bit of hope that Nexon stops being Nexon, or that MapleStory gets sold to another company that isn’t ruining the game with cancerous power creep.

I’m looking at the free miracle cubes and i am pleased. It drops from boss monsters which include horntail and zakum and last time i checked they didn’t get buffed only their chaos versions did. If you guys stop your whining you’ll realize that now if u make a new character you can get it up to epic ranking for FREE and it could be good like 18% on all equips (6% x3) If the two people up there are new classes we get to funded them for free. The drop rate on the stuff is increased so you can even get a horntail necklace easier. Recipies, and mastery books from zakum and horntail are also easier to obtain.
I also don’t get why people are complaining about the fact they can’t reach the new max damage. The people who are complaining don’t hit max now they probably never will, the bosses who got buffed required someone funded to beat or alot of people who wernt weak as crap. They make is so you have to party unless they some how reach 50mil damage to beat all the strong bosses. Now everyone complains that even the funded have to party up oh wow guys. I don’t spend a penny on this game I haven’t been complaining about strong bosses i couldn’t beat solo before who got stronger meaning i need an expedition to kill. If you all stopped complaining about parting being gone and that nonsense maybe the outcome would’ve been different, assuming that the Korean community complains as much as you guys do. Also they will probably do like they did big bang and BUFF every class and they will probably keep buffing each class over and over again. Hyper skills will probably become stronger and either get an increased damage cap or have no damage cap but that’s unlikely. You don’t have to pay to win either just farm from zakum and horntail and all the other monsters and you can reach funded level without buying cubes.
Free miracle cubes that gets u to a wanted epic tier? very idealistic. The cube is is either gonna downgrade ur potiental tier or get it to epic. Downgrading is probaly a higher probablity than getting to epic. Also even if u get an epic, it doesnt nessary mean that u’ll get the 6% u want.

It’s hard to say at this point. Depending on what they do, pre-potentialed equips might be able to obtain options too. The funded players would be even more powerful.
I think this is just be an easy alternative for the unfunded players to get their gears. It would just balance out everyone. However, knowing how money hungry nexon is…I kinda have my doubts.

DS atm cannot equip a sword at all, it would make more sense if the sword guy was another demon.
