Interview with the Director of the MapleStory V Update!
Maple Inven published a new interview today, with the director of the MapleStory V update! There was a lot of interesting information and I won’t be translating it completely but I will post the big tidbits!
The director mentioned that 5th job is still a work in progress, they will continue to develop things for it and they are aiming to add another skill for all jobs.
In terms of V Cores and Core Gemstones, he said that it is random for what Cores you can get but when you open Core Gemstones, there is a slightly higher chance to get Cores for your job (they are willing to adjust this if it’s still too bad).
In this month, they will also be adding the Core Combine and Core Disenchant systems to help ease the randomness.
In terms of Arcane Force, he said it is extremely important in the Arcane River and there is no other way to increase your Arcane Force other than upgrading your Arcane Symbols.
Here’s what the level 200 equipment set looks like! I think they’re awesome, the whole starry/interstellary theme is great.
The director said that the level 200 equipment set’s stats will be reflective of its level, but the level 160 set will still be useful as it will take a long time to obtain these new equips. If needed, level 160~200 equipment sets may be added in the future as well.
The experience table has been decreased by approximately 30%. Certain level ranges which do not have as much content available have been decreased by 40~50%.
When asked about the maximum damage cap removal, the director said that they wanted users to be able to access their full strength, and did not want the game to be decided by the highest number of hits per second. They are willing to buff/nerf jobs based on this change in the future.
For the status resistance changes, he said that almost every user could get to 100% status resistance, which caused bosses to be trivial unless they were able to ignore status resistance, which was a bandaid solution. He said there are limits to how interactive avoiding attacks can be in a 2D side-scrolling game so they changed status resistance to decrease duration of status effect. In the future, if this causes bosses to become significantly more difficult, their battle patterns will be readjusted.
For other battle-related stats, he said that for a long time, accuracy has been thought of as useless so they removed it and changed hit rate to be based on the user’s level. For critical damage, it was very unintuitive that your minimum critical damage would become your maximum critical damage if it exceeded it so they combined them into one.
The new continent Arcane River features a mighty flowing river that leads to the Black Mage. It consists of 3 areas: Road of Vanishing, Chu Chu Island, and the City of Dreams Lacheln. They will be added one at a time because they are putting a lot of attention to each area.
Each one is made to be a new type of experience. For example, the BGMs and sound effects will have more acoustic and environmental sounds. This year, they will be composed and produced by Nexon’s internal team rather than outsourcing. Last month, the Damien soundtrack was released and even more great and high-quality BGMs will be released through the site.
The interviewer asked where the idea for the bright and cheery Chu Chu Island came from. He replied that for MapleStory, as monsters get higher and higher levelled, they become more fierce looking, and they wanted a charming high level area with a more happy concept.
Grandis still has some work to be done, while Friends Story is not part of the main story so it is not as high a priority. Currently, development is focused on the story of Arcane River.
Commander Lucid has appeared before but now, with a new appearance, she will be a large part of the story and a boss monster in Arcane River. She will not be part of a blockbuster because they felt that there is a difference between a closed story in a blockbuster and a more open story in a new area.
At the end of the continent Arcane River, you will be able to meet the Black Mage. However, this won’t necessarily happen during the summer update.
Their goals for the new UI were to make it more convenient to use and to increase openness for easier skill usage. They know it is a huge change for existing users but they are very open to comments and concerns from users in the test servers.
Finally, they do think that Hard Suu will be defeated sooner or later after this patch. In addition to the level 160 item set, there are still some rewards from him that have not been found yet!

Max does the 200 set consist of top/bottom or overall?
dude. . .look at the images .. . seems like an overall to me unless that is a very seamlessly designed top + bottom
Well, since if Nexon listens to the community or pays any attention, which recently they have been and it’s been AMAZING, they would know that top and bottom are the better choice for an end game set. Also it is hard to tell on some images that if it is an overall or a top like coat and bottoms that are just kinda covered up by the top. It’s not just looking at the images and assuming. He wants to know a definite answer because this could change end-game equips forever.
Actually an overall would make more sense since it means less cubing (and I think we can assume that the base stats may make up for the lack of having a bottom) and all in all it is more simple and easy to get and understand and all. The director has been clear that he wants to simplify the game.
I think overalls vs. top and bottom can be made fair just like they did for people with dual weapon/shield slot users vs. single weapon users. In that case they created secondary items but in this case they can just double the potential potency on overalls. Also, slightly adjust chances so that top and bottoms don’t have the advantage of giving you a better overall average.
No specifics but yeah it does look like an overall. Won’t know for sure until it gets released in the test servers.
hey max . .can you start a petition in KMS for the 200 set to be able to use the transpose system like Sweetwater does when it eventually comes to GMS cause.. . you know .. I doubt it wins over cRA despite having nice stats simply cause of tyrant equips and their OP stats when enhanced to 10 – 15 stars. We gots no 16+ stars and like hell is GMS gonna release MEE scrolls .. .sooo . . I’d like the new set to be relevant, but I fear it’ll end up like absolabs has now in GMS .. . .hard to get AND hardly anyone sees a point to it and really tries to get it.

My personal comparison of Absolabs vs Tyrants + Root Abyss set is that its EQUAL to tyrants + cRA when the tyrants are 1 – 2 stars each. Soon as you hit 3 stars on each tyrant you’ve gone past what the set effect + higher base weapon attack will make up for in the loss of a extra piece of equipment to potential for top + bottom vs overall which snowballs to the entire set then being crap in comparison to what most people are using already and won’t bother switching to Absolabs here in GMS since we can’t enhance past 15 stars to get extra stats to make up for Miraculous Equip Enhancement scrolls or superior item stats.
Grandis…to be honest we have not seen a blockbuster there yet, even though it is a major part of the lore. Maybe there is more to the Black Mage then we thought?
The entire world has its own set of transcendents (in maple: time [Rhinne/Zero], light [Black Mage], and life [Alicia]), of which we only know of one: Darmoor. Magnus himself is technically a commander of Darmoor who played ball for the Black Mage for extra power before going back to Darmoor.
I wouldn’t necessarily say there’s more to the black mage (though there probably is, just not in grandis), but there’s certainly more in the other world that hasn’t been explored.
Well, In the Zero Story, Alice lost her transcendence. (It’s hinted to Cygnus.)
And the other Grandis Transcendents; Aiona of Light and Chronica of Time; are only mentioned in passing in the AB story line. Darmoor of Life has control of Aboris, so maybe the story could so there? He has to know about the worlds merging, but if the last blockbuster will be about the Black Mage…what will happen next?

I assume the ‘encounter’ is probably going to be something like challenge, or the Black Mage using a shadow or something again. I doubt we’ll actually be fighting the Black Mage himself. Maybe another illusion/dream caused by Lucid?

Even if it is against the Black Mage himself (though I doubt this), I still don’t think it’d be the last blockbuster. There’s quite literally another world out there to explore, and Maplestory isn’t just about to go jump right off a cliff and stop producing story content.
Though on the note of Darmoor, I think he stole another transcendent’s powers, similar to how the Black Mage attacked Rhinne for hers, but I don’t remember my Nova characters all that well.

If I remember correctly, Darmoor of Life stole the powers of Chronica of Time, like the Black Mage did with Rhinne.
So…. CRA & SW cubing/nebbing isn’t worth doing because we should just wait until the 200 set comes? Especially since there’s no transferring… rest in peace legendary potential.
It will take forever to get the new equips probably, and if you want to just not have strong gear for at least 6 months or more, go ahead 😛
Can I just check with you about the Arcane Equipment function , the one with Arcane symbol . The level 100 and level 5 orbs , it adds 10k Str ?? Can you explain more about that function how it works how to level it up and is it by training or pay to win . It seems very useful , 10k stats is a huge buff . 🙂 Please help with this

Can I check with you the Arcane Equipment box , with the level 100 and level 5 sphere or core . It adds 10k Stats? Holy thats insane. Can you go more into detail about that specific function because it seems like a really cool system and a huge buff to everyone’s damage . Also, please include info such as how to level it how to get it and so on . Thank you 🙂

I know you are joking, but there is probably more to this. At the end of Black Heaven, Orchid speaks about finding the true ruler of the darkness. The Elite Bosses also speak of ‘another body’ and ‘we are doing this because it’s family matters.’ We also have no clue to the identity of the dieties such as the transcendents for Grandis, The Fox God, other beings similar to Braxas, the truth of Cygnus- Trancendent, or otherwise. There are areas such as Shadow Sleepywood, and maybe Shadow Kerning city.
Btw, love the new look for Lucid. And what’s her story? She’s supposed to wait in slumber for something or someone. Do we meet them?
The Bowman, Thief, and Pirate sets look like re-skins of those level 140 sets that are not from bosses, while the Warrior and Magician sets look new? Wow, Nexon trolled three class type! And now that I think about it, the Blaster would look awkward in Warrior equips. It doesn’t use “knight” weapons, yet still use their armors. As for Kinesis, he loves cosplaying as magicians.
A question about Arcane EQ, does each level give a fixed increment or is it totally dependent on luck?
I’m pretty sure it’s fixed. My Arcane Symbol: Road of Vanishing started at 30 Arcane Force and 300 DEX and gained +10 AF/+100 DEX every level.

People might get it before even in KMS hahaha, i imagine people getting the pieces before in the actual content of the game….
Nothing about improving trading or making potential system not so P2W? The game will just continue to die without changes to these two aspects.

And I don’t really see the issue with the potential system. If you play the game, you get mesos. If you get mesos, you can buy maple points, which you can use to get cubes. It’s pretty idiot proof to me. Sure, you have to keep rolling, but eh.
they are probably a GMS player, so they can’t just buy maple points with meso because GMS dont have Auction House or Meso Market.
Oh so they’re coming on a blog that’s by and large about the korean version of the game, on a post talking about features added/changed in a patch for the korean version, with the korean version’s update director.
I shouldn’t be surprised after all those posts in the last few updates about “wow where’s hayato/kanna/beast tamer 5th job?!?!?!?!” but man. People are silly.
Whoa buddy- get off your high horse. Many of the changes that KMS gets we also will get in roughly six months. We have a right to look at what’s happening. Also, in during the full enouncement in the spring, they did say they were going to make some changes to the potential system. One could look at what’s happening right now and see the loss of useless lines. But some people were hoping for something less luck based- why should it take one person a total of 30-40 cubes to get the perfect lines while another might just get it in 1-3? I was personally hoping for something I called Potential traces- you could rip a line that you like and put it on ‘trace’ , and then later put it on the same type of equipment, (helmet, weapon, etc.) so long as it has potential in the same tier. This way, you could save any really good lines, and keep cubing. For the people who can hit really high damage already, they could replace junk lines, and get more prime lines.
That’s fine, except he mentioned nothing about luck, he wants “less p2w”, which is just the battlecry of the average GMS player. I don’t care if you want to know what’s happening but don’t ask max what’s coming to GMS, he doesn’t work for nexon NA, they steal his work more often than not, blatantly, and without credit.
Also, many of the features on KMS DIDN’T come to GMS, which leads to this whole divide, and the angry playerbase of GMS. If you guys had auction system which your CMs blatantly lied about being broken, I have a feeling that there’d be a ton more happy players.
I don’t know why i’m even arguing this though, GMS is getting the auction house soon. People have been datamining and found changed GUI elements for the auction house in GMS .wz files.
I like your idea for a potential trace though, good stuff. Just bothers me when people go around screaming “P2W WOW TERRIBLE”, cause you wanna know what they did with maple 2? No cubes. You want better lines on an item? You go run the boss again. You’re out of keys? Fuck you pal, wait. I’ll take cubes over that pile of garbage any day.

By reducing the number of bad outcomes, you increase the odds of good outcomes, now, the only bad outcomes for the most part will be getting stats for the wrong job, in which case you can often sell/trade them for the stats you want.

The game died in Korea AND China (based on what Max and Spadow said previously). Don’t hold your breath for this one.

Quite obvious that the 5th job is rushed(which explains how crap-tastic it looked).
And the fact that they “do not want to change the gameplay” is a lousy excuse for being lazy. Just look at some of the full revamps they did to certain jobs, they totally changed the game-play of those jobs by changing majority(if not all) of the skills and mechanics, so why CAN’T they do the same for 5th?
You’ve acknowledged that they’ve done it many times before, which makes it obvious that the reason they DIDN’T do it this time is NOT because they’re lazy.
Yeah, they’ve done it many times in the past, but what that means is that they’re NOT too lazy to do it! After all, they’ve done so on MANY occasions, so they’ve proven they have the gumption to do so if they really wanted to.
And I’d like to add that what we’ve seen is just the tip of the iceberg, so you should shut up about “that’s all there is? You’re serious?”, because it’s NOT all there is, they’ve said so a few times already. They want to spread out the release of 5th job skills, and July 16 will just be “wave one” of 5th job. We’ll see more 5th job skills, probably over the next few updates.
you dumbasses realize that if it was the same old standard of job release we would still be waiting years for 5th job for every class considering how there are many more using many different kinds of systems since the release of 4th job.
4th job took them what? 6+ months of testing and we had maybe half the amount of classes back then as we do now. How log do you expect testing for a huge amount of new skills for the double amount of classes, many of which use different types of systems.

I would like to agree, in a less insulting manner. We just got one skill, the main manager himself says we are getting another. We also get a huge increase of our main stat from the Arcane orbs- much better in comparison to the small skill that many classes get in second job. We also got changes to the critical system- to which as an I/L Mage, means that my 40% max critical from ice stacks also is my min critical, making my damage a lot more stable. Most classes have some passive that raises the power of a lower job skill- that also applies to this system, with more control.
What more could you really expect? That Nightwalker would throw another star? That Battle Mage would have a blow beyond Finisher? The V matrix is designed to be a challenge, even if you reach lvl 250, you can do more to improve. Not to give you some freebee skills just because you were able to get to lvl 200 because you bought some experience coupons for a burning character during an event 2x, which usually come with some way of getting the pendant of spirit, kinship rings, etc.

First off, do not insult me by calling me a fool. Second, your argument proves nothing- I even mentioned the fact that there are less lines. So your first mistake was attempting to use my own words and turn it on its head, against me.
Second, technically, it’s still luck based in general. Taking away less lines doesn’t make it less so- it’s still up to chance regardless. Reduced chance is still luck. My potential trace system would allow people to have some actual control over their lines, for themselves.
And finally, you argue that people can trade if they have a perfect potential for someone else’s class. The first thing that is wrong with that is the ability to trade in general: Tradeblock exists, Reboot is a thing, and even getting a buyer is a problem. The second thing is this: try telling that to the guy who has +30% magic attack on a Two handed mace. My potential trace system would be able to persevere the +12% line and be able to give it to someone else, rather than wasting it.(Well, I’m not sure as to whether or not I should make the Potential trace as a ‘Moveable within the account’ or completely tradeable due to keeping the game balanced, but you still have secondary characters that you could play. Just because I’m an I/L Mage doesn’t mean I won’t play with my Mercedes, and combo the field.)
You are incorrect in your reeasoning. I will stop treating you like a fool when you stop acting like one. You want me to respect your intelligence, then your intelligence will have to earn it, same as everyone and everything else.
Taking chance out altogether, like you are suggesting, makes it NOT luck based, it does not make it LESS luck based. Increasing the probability for success, means it takes less luck to be successful and in doing so, is based LESS ON LUCK. Luck becomes less of a factor, and you need less of it for success.
Guaranteeing you get lines you need, is taking luck out of the equation altogether, not simply making it less of a factor
So if your goal was to add a system that removes luck as a factor, then you should say so. But you said you wanted it to be LESS of one, which is exactly what was done.
You are still not getting it aren’t you? It’s still luck based, even with my system. You still have to deal with the odds of GETTING the line you want first. Ask anyone who tries to get a 40% boss for a line. Then you store one line that you like- then repeat. It reduces the luck based on the fact that currently, we all keep cubing until we have three perfect lines. Now, you cube until you get one line, save that line, and repeat- starting with the cubing. You have to do that 3 times for each item in your equipment slots.
As for your respect, I don’t think I need respect from someone who not only has to be explained three times, but also someone who likes to believe that everyone else is wrong- thus arguing and insulting people about something in a Mmo- on a blog that belongs to someone else. It’s my respect you should be earning, not the other way around.

Max I know it’s a 30% decrease in exp for 1-200 but this time around for the decrease, does that that count from 200-250 this time?
200-201 is still around 2 billion on tespia.

All I can say is that I’m happy they’re finally getting out the 5th job thing and that probably that had a reason to why it’s been really late after teasing it a few years back (maybe programming? schedule stuff? Money? Trying to find a good time or something?Maybe some laziness but something more than that. ). It might look shitty and small at first but the director said that they’re going to add more stuff for the next job so I can say that’s okay. I wasn’t in maple when the 4th job stuff happened but if it took that long to make things running smoothly then I could expect the same would happen when the 5th job comes out. Wish that they made it seem less as a hyper skill thing tho…. As for Kanna, Hayato, Beast Tamer’s 5th skill KMS doesn’t have those classes so if you guys want to know the 5th class skills for them you gotta wait till it comes to GMS and JMS.
… Man I love the 200 equips style. Stary~!! Hope that they could beat the cRA set.

Could someone explain the critical changes to me clearly does that mean all the criticals one does will have a fixed % increase instead of a variant % increase?
Also how can they say they don’t understand the logic of the systems when they were the ones to implement them in the first place?
It means critical is now one %. Yes. It’s not that the system “didn’t make sense to them”, I think it’s more of an implication that it’s fucking stupid to have minimum crit suddenly take over as the maximum crit, and maximum crit take over as minimum crit, should minimum crit reach a point where it’s higher than maximum crit.
It’s a needless complication, really, i’m sure numbers will stay the same, or around what they are right now, I think it’s just cleaning up old, deprecated mechanics, same as the removal of accuracy and avoid which are almost useless right now, accuracy IS useless, it literally does nothing right now, ever since they made accuracy against mobs based on your level.
Just let Nexon do their thing, they’re smart Korean game company that produced many great games. You’ll still play the game even with the hatred for their systems. Your opinions here won’t bring major changes to the game.
