KMS ver. 1.2.289 – MapleStory Ark: Ark, the Boy who Became a Monster!

World Select (Ark).gif

The second patch of the MapleStory Ark update has been released, containing the new High Lef race class Ark, the Boy who Became a Monster. It also has a bunch of useful player suggested updates from the Voice of Mapler campaign!

EDIT: KMS ver. 1.2.290 was released on January 11, but it was a small patch with not much other than Ark’s 5th job so I will just combine them into this post.

Here’s the Maple Update Info Centre video for this patch.

These are a couple of cool Ark posters that Nexon released.

New High Lef Job: Ark

Ark Character Creation.png

Ark, a member of Grandis’ High Lef race, was drawn into a despicable scheme, resulting in half of his body becoming a Spectre. After wandering through the abyss, he awoke with lost memories, and now struggles to find his true identity in this chaotic situation.

Ark is a pirate class. He can freely switch between two states: the Lef mode where he combines magic and classic High Lef fighting techniques and the Looming Spectre mode where he gains immense power from the abyss.

Ark has a special UI that consists of two parts. It will probably make a little more sense after you read all of the skills so you might want to do that first.

On the top is your willpower gauge. It will slowly fill up over time in Lef mode. If it’s filled (any amount, it could be even a small bit of red) you can use Looming Control to enter Looming Spectre mode! The duration of the mode depends on how filled the gauge is, if its completely full it lasts about 1 minute.

While in Looming Spectre mode, the willpower gauge will slowly be consumed. When Looming Spectre mode is about to end, you’ll receive a message and red outline on your screen. After you return to Lef mode, your willpower will be completely exhausted for 20 seconds. During this time, your willpower will not recover. After 20 seconds pass, it start to fill up again once more.

TIP: If you use Looming Control to manually change back to Lef mode, there’s no 20 second cooldown. So you can just use it right before you would change back to Lef mode and you’ll instantly start recovering willpower instead of having to wait.

Charged Spells

On the bottom part of the UI, there are 5 slots. This is where your Charge Spells are stored. Every time you use a Charge Spell, one of these will be filled up. You can only charge 1 spell of each type except for the Plain Charge Spell (which has no limit).

When you use Spell Bullet, all of your currently charged spells will be consumed and they will activate special attacks based on the type as well as give you different buffs for 60 seconds.

  • The story begins as Ark tries to regain his memories while working together with the Caravan to escape Verdel.

Story

Direction17.img.effect.ark.illust.6.0.0_new

Ark’s story begins with a speech, given by none other than Gerald Darmoor, to a group of High Lefs. He speaks about the war for peace, and how the High Lefs must fight and dedicate their lives in order to help control the chaotic world.

Direction17.img.effect.ark.illust.4.0.0_new

Ark was also a part of this war, and lost many loved ones as a result. Eventually, his belief in the cause was lost and he was in the process of being taken over by a Spectre (it is unclear how this happened). But in his final moments of thought, someone cried out his name.

Ark awoke in the desert wasteland planet of Verdel, where he was found by a travelling caravan led by Niya. Assuming Ark was the same as the monsters which had been attacking them, they tied him up and demanded that he reveal his identity. However, Ark could only remember one thing, his name.

Suddenly, the caravan was attacked by Spectres, and they ran away. Ark returned to save a child that was left behind, but his body was taken over by the Spectre inside. When his consciousness returned, he was already at the new location of the caravan. Ark wanted to leave the planet but Niya said that they didn’t know how. The caravan was originally travelling from planet to planet, in search of paradise, but an ominous vortex crashed their ship on Verdel. They were unable to find any other civilization and scrounged materials to create a shelter to survive.

While helping out some members of the tribe, Ark followed Maru (the child he saved earlier) to his secret hideout where he collected shiny objects, as his only wish was to see the starry night sky. Ark recognized this shining rock and regained some of his memories.

In the past, in front of this same rock, Ark and an unnamed boy talked about how they had been assigned to Verdel, where only elite troops were sent. They were being supervised by Brigadier General Limbo, a highly praised member of the High Lef military. “For our victory! For the glory of the Lefs!”

Direction17.img.effect.ark.illust.8.0.0_new

Ark realized that they could use the crystal to leave the planet, but they needed to find its power source first. The caravan planned an expedition to find it, and along their way, a bomb that Bark Bark used caused them to fall into a cave.

Here, Ark and Way fought through sand helmets and armour until they reached the Armour Graveyard, where Ark remembered the horrible truth behind the area. In the past, there was in fact a civilization on the planet, but the High Lefs massacred the entire race. Ark, seeing this, had feelings of fear, helplessness, and betrayal. Albert tried to calm him down and remind him that it was necessary for the High Lefs’ cause.

After Ark and the caravan left the cave, he remembered a bit more about his past in Verdel. After torturing the race that lived on the planet, they had obtained the information needed to complete installation of the ‘Absorber’. The remaining ‘barbarians’ would become a sacrifice to the High Lefs. Brigadier General Limbo’s true appearance was revealed, a Spectre. This was all a part of the plan of the High Lefs, “For the true world under the 13 stars!”.

In the present, Spectres were prepared to attack the caravan for the crystal. While fighting them, Ark lost consciousness again.  This time, Ark forcefully supressed the Spectre, who wanted to take over Ark’s body completely (this is when you gain the skill Looming Control.

Suddenly, Ark was confronted by a High Lef, the one controlling the Spectres. The commander was Albert, Ark’s best friend. They graduated from military school together and promised to protect each other no matter what. However, Ark spoke with Brigadier General Limbo about his doubts, and was labelled a traitor. In his final moments before being taken over by the Spectre, someone cried out his name, Albert. He stopped the ritual, saying that he would protect Ark no matter what.

Direction17.img.effect.ark.illust.11.0.0_new

In the present, Albert was completely different. He told Ark not to interfere with the High Lef’s mission. All the pain was necessary for the end of tragedy… for that day. Ark argued, saying it was genocide without reason. One year, ten years, a hundred years, how many lives would be sacrificed before that day came?

After being defeated, Ark asked Albert what happened to him. He remembered that Albert wanted to protect the precious people in front of him, but Albert simply said that he wasn’t being serious, before he left.

Direction17.img.effect.ark.illust.12.0.0_new

Meanwhile, the caravan managed to activate the crystal, which took them to Savage Terminal. Verdel’s surface was dried up, twisted, and blown away entirely. The caravan, glad to be away from the planet, wanted to continue searching for their paradise. Ark decided to split paths from them, but left them with the words “I hope that someday, you will find the paradise you are hoping for.” (This is when you gain the skill Contact Caravan).

Looking for information, Ark found Connie being threatened and saved him. In exchange, he agreed to answer his questions. Although he didn’t have much information about the High Lefs (other than they had a large influence and impact over Grandis), Ark asked about how the current war was going on. Connie, confused, answered that after Grandis fell into the hands of the High Lefs, there was no big event that could be considered a war. Only hundreds of years ago was there a war between the High Lefs and Wooden Lefs. (This could mean that Ark had been asleep for hundreds of years!)

He mentioned that the Nova race of Pantheon did not surrender and had opened their doors to other warriors for help to retake their capital. Before he left, Cadena appeared and thought that Ark was an enemy, but Connie managed to convince her that he had just helped him out.

Kaiser

After heading to Pantheon, he became weakened due to its shield. Kaiser discovered him, along with Catalion, Belder, and Fennel. They were struggling to identify his race, as he had the ears of a High Lef but no magic wings, as well as an arm similar to the Spectres that Magnus controlled. Ark, who had regained his memories, was able to explain that his goal was to fight against the High Lefs and find a way to stop Gerald Darmoor. Kaiser trusted him and allowed him safe passage through the Dimension Gate to Maple World.

While travelling through Maple World, Ark investigated an evil aura near Sleepywood. Here, he met Kaiser once more, who said that he was investigating for the same reason and told Ark that he would give him some news very soon. Ark received an invitation from the “Great Magician” Francis, to join the Black Wings.

After defeating him, he was met by Angelic Buster, who had a report from Kaiser for him. The report was based off a memo left in the Black Mage’s lab, which contained a story about Maple World’s Transcendents. It talked about how the Dimensional Gate was created, and also how when a Transcendent uses another’s power, they are damaged greatly. Ark inferred that Darmoor, who had done the same thing, was also weakened and that is why he had been in the background for so long, recovering his power.

20171229192911690_940205800

Each of Ark’s job advancements are him conversing with the Spectre inside, who wants to completely take over his body. The Spectre explains that he comes from the root of the abyss, a place where there are only a few ways to reach. Ark was one of the only people who was able to do so. However, the cost of seeing the knowledge of the root is to become a Spectre while losing your body and soul. Ark somehow was able to escape with only losing his memories. Eventually, the Spectre explains that Ark did not fully become a Spectre due to interference from the outside world, as well as the fact that Ark had a ‘special soul’.

Without you I wouldn’t have been able to start playing KMS given I joined right when most of the english community was quitting, and I still play to this day because of the help you give in these patch notes. Thanks for always being so helpful Max. You’re a fucking awesome guy.

Mannequins/Hair Rooms are KMS’ version of the thing where you can save hairs to swap at any time that GMS has (except its much more expensive and much more limited).

Hey Max do you know if there’s a way to disable the flashback animations for male Ark? I know female doesn’t have them at all.

(assuming you’re talking about the 5th job skill) I’m pretty sure both genders of Arks have them because its the literal skill animation, it wouldn’t make any sense for it not to appear for female Arks.

Nothing this update. It could be in the summer but we won’t know until they release any teasers.

Do you have an estimate as to when Ark himself might hit us over in GMS? I’ve been prepping for this class since I heard about him lol I’m super excited

KMS’ winter updates are always GMS’ summer updates (and vice versa) so you should expect Ark probably around May-June!
