KMST ver. 1.2.183 – Maple Now & Union Champion

The January update’s test server patch was released yesterday, with the new Union Champion system. That’s the bulk of it, along with some corresponding changes and other QoL. This will be coming to the official server next week! Director Changseop also did a Maple Now stream going over the patch as well as some tidbits about Baldrix.

And as its the first post of 2025, Happy New Year to everyone!

Maple Now (25.01.09)

With the test server patch, Director Changseop went live with a Maple Now stream. It started off with some apologies as always, including an issue that was happening with a small amount of Meso Market trades. He explained that they’re making bigger changes to make the game more fun for players, but this comes with its own challenges and errors that they will inevitably face and have to fix.

Most of the stuff he talked about is just from the patch notes so I won’t cover it twice, but there were some additional details/sidenotes that he gave.

Union Champion

  • Union Champion is a system that lets you gradually gain stats on your characters as they defeat higher tier bosses. In addition to that, doing the Champion Raid content monthly with these characters grants you access to temporary buffs that give more stats.
  • Since the showcase, they decided to increase the value of the ‘all stats’ buff (it also has HP/MP which was not mentioned in the showcase).
  • They also moved some of the stats that were going to be given through the temporary Champion’s Blessings buffs to the permanent Union Champion stats.
  • There will be some temporary changes and permanent changes together with the addition of the Union Champion system. MapleStory is going to become a game that further incentivizes playing multiple characters so changes have to be made to support that.
    • In this January update, you can only have up to 3 characters in the Union Champion system. This is because although the game didn’t stop you from having multiple characters, it didn’t really encourage it before and the new system requires even stronger characters to complete the missions. This is intended to be more of an end-game system that takes a long time to be finished and they didn’t want players to feel forced to have to suddenly spec up on 6 characters all at once. They will unlock further slots one by one over time.
    • In the February update, the new boss Baldrix will be added. Union Champion stats and buffs will not be applied in Baldrix temporarily. Baldrix will be the first boss added after the Union Champion system, and of course it will have players rushing to get the first clears. This is a very short period of time in between and they thought it would be too stressful for those players to be forced to fully complete the Union Champion system within a month to be ready for Baldrix. The stats will be applied normally in the March update and for any new bosses after that, the Union Champion stats will be applied normally.
    • To give players some additional information to prepare for Baldrix, he gave the following details.
      • It is a 3-person party boss.
      • The cross-world boss matching feature will be available.
      • The Union Champion buff effects will not be applied (both Champion Insignias and Champion’s Blessings).
      • The 5m Maple Points reward that was given for Limbo will not be given out this time. They want to distribute the rewards better to more players instead of focusing on only the first few clears.
    • To coincide with the new meta of bossing on multiple characters, the following changes will be made.
      • Link Skill improvements (daily transfer limit removed, meso cost for transfers past 5 removed)
      • Noblesse Guild skill improvements (cooldowns changed to 5 minutes)
      • Intense Power Crystal reorganization (weekly sell limit changed to 90 Crystals)
    • With the new Union Champion system incentivizing multiple characters as well as the changes to Link Skills/Guild Skills, they thought it would affect the supply of mesos too much so they decided to make this change to the weekly crystal limit. 90 weekly limit/12 character limit = 7.5 so you can sell all the crystals on about 7 characters with some leeway. They also looked at data from this past week for the number of crystals sold and when lowering the limit from 180 to 90, only a little over 1% of players would be affected. Of course, this is without these new changes that make it easier to boss on more characters. And as the Union Champion system becomes a more core part of MapleStory, it would end up affecting the economy more and more, so they decided that it would be best to match the limit to the number of characters that this system requires ahead of time.
  • The Noblesse Guild Skill changes are something that players have wanted for a long time, and they have been thinking of a good way to do it but rather than continuing to worry and delay it, they decided this was a good time to just add it in.
  • They wanted to reorganize Link Skills in a more fundamental way, but it didn’t match up with their work schedule, so they are making this change for now and will go back for additional changes when possible.

Events

  • The Dawn Star Fountain event will be added to give additional Commemoration Coins and Challenger Coins. They were conservative with the amount of coins they gave out originally, and players were definitely lacking a bit, but now that the event is halfway over, they have more leeway to give out more.
  • After the Dawn Star Fountain event ends, the Burning Express event will begin. In the last Hyper Burning event, less than 30% of players reached level 260 over the entire event period but this season, 20% of players have already reached level 260 in less than a month. This Burning Express is more focused on rewards that are helpful past level 260.
  • The Broomy’s Deep Cleaning event will be improved so that there is a higher chance of hitting the large experience boost on the 30th activation of the day with a bigger variety of possible activations. In the last week of the event, the special activations can activate on every 10th/20th/30th activation. (He noted there’s actually a message right now when a player hits the special activation but most people probably haven’t even seen it since it’s so rare.)

Cash

  • The 1st set of NPC Style Awards packages will be available for purchase. These are the top 12 NPCs that players voted on to have outfits made inspired by those NPCs. The second set will be released next month.

Other

  • He showed off the new Smart AI Correction option (video timestamp). MapleStory uses sprites that they have to make frame-by-frame and this new feature uses AI to add pictures in between each image to create smoother animations. He mentioned they’re using the one available on Steam and contacted the developers to work together on this feature. It’s not something that everyone will like or want, and it still doesn’t work well with names/medals/etc. so they’re going to continue to work on it. It’s a kind of technical challenge and they may remove it later, but they’re very open to trying new things and working with other organizations like this. Even though MapleStory is a 20-year old game, they want to continue to improve and innovate.
  • High Mountain’s difficulty has been adjusted to basically be a lot easier and take about half the time as before. Since it was the first Epic Dungeon, the difficulty was a bit higher but now, it’s a bit too hard given its unlocked right at level 260 which a fresh Hyper Burning can reach pretty easily.
  • Many viewers were asking about a balance patch. He said that he doesn’t really like the term ‘balance patch’, and the process of finding balance is a constant battle. They made necessary adjustments in September and it’s been about three weeks since the new Mastery Cores were added. They’re looking at all of the data and will take measures as needed. They want to adjust not with the concept of ‘balance’ but rather making players’ gameplay and combat experience better.
  • Viewers asked for a New Year’s gift and he said they already gave out 25 Maximum Growth Potions.

Union Champion

<Union Champion> has been added.

  • Union Champion is a system where you can designate some of your characters within the world as Champions. Based on the growth level of each Champion character, all of your Champion characters’ stats will be increased.

Union Champion & Champion Raid Summary

I’m gonna try to summarize this new system (along with some information that may have been unclear or not included in the patch notes). First off, the Union Champion system itself.

  • You can register characters as Champions. You get 2 slots by default and can unlock up to 1 more. The last 3 slots will become available at a later time.
  • Your Champions cannot have multiple characters of the same job. This is one of the most common questions/concerns that I have seen. It means you cannot have something like 2 Dark Knights for example. However, you could have 1 Hero, 1 Dark Knight, and 1 Paladin (i.e. class branches can be repeated like 3x warriors).
  • Each Champion starts at C Rank. You can increase each Champion’s Rank by completing the Champion Evaluations. You must do this in order, one by one.
  • The Champion Evaluation requires you to solo certain bosses in ‘Champion Mode’. This is basically the ‘real mode’ of the boss but it forces you to enter in a party of 1. You cannot complete Champion Evaluations through Genesis Liberation missions (because those have different conditions, although it only applies to Suu/Jin Hilla I guess). You can also do them in Practice Mode and clears in Practice Mode will also count.
  • After a Champion completes an Evaluation, its Rank can be increased and it will acquire an additional Champion Insignia based on the Rank. This Champion Insignia gives stats permanently to all Champion characters, and they all stack together.
  • If all currently unlocked Champion Slots have Champions that are A Rank or higher, you can then unlock the next Champion Slot.
  • I think there was some confusion from initial translations where people thought that unlocking a new Champion Slot would reset the progress of all Champion Ranks and you would have to redo all of the Champion Evaluation missions, but this is incorrect. The only time any progress is reset is if you decide to remove one of your Champions (e.g. if you wanted to replace one of your existing Champions with a different character), in which case you must pay 1b mesos. When that Champion is removed, only that Champion Slot will be completely reset, and the new character you designate in that slot will have to start from C Rank.
  • I’ll give some examples of stats that you can gain from this system.
    • Champion 1 completes the Champion Evaluations up to SSS Rank (clearing Normal Kalos). It will acquire all 5 Insignias and give All Stats +20, Max HP/MP +1,000, Attack/Magic Attack +10, Boss Damage +5%, Critical Damage +3.00%, and Defense Ignore +5% to all Champions.
    • Afterwards, Champion 2 completes the Champion Evaluations up to S Rank (clearing Hard Black Mage). It will acquire the first 3 Insignias. This will stack with Champion 1’s Insignias, for a total of All Stats +40, Max HP/MP +2,000, Attack/Magic Attack +20, Boss Damage +10%, Critical Damage +3.00%, and Defense Ignore +5% to all Champions.
    • Since Champion 1 and 2 are both A Rank or higher, you can unlock the third Champion Slot.
    • Champion 3 completes the Champion Evaluations up to B Rank (clearing Hard Suu). It will acquire the first Insignia. This will stack with Champion 1 and 2’s Insignias.
    • If you had three characters that all completed the SSS Rank Champion Evaluations, your Champions would gain a total of All Stats +60, Max HP/MP +3,000, Attack/Magic Attack +30, Boss Damage +15%, Critical Damage +9.00%, and Defense Ignore +15%.
    • Later on, when they unlock all 6 Champion Slots, if you had fully maxed out 6x SSS Rank Champions, the total stats would be doubled.

Then comes the Champion Raid: Dragon Island system.

  • You need at least 2 Champions to enter the Champion Raid.
  • When you enter, you have 5 minutes to do basic set up for your characters. All buffs will be removed upon entry. You cannot use any consumables, buffs, or things like Link Skills or Noblesse Guild Skills. You will be given Power Elixirs to use.
  • Inside the Champion Raid, you can press the Tab key then 1/2/3 to switch between your Champions in real time.
  • Each Champion can only be played for a total of 3 minutes. This time will not be deducted when there are no monsters on the map. While a character is on standby (not actively being played), their cooldowns will continue to tick down.
  • Each Champion has a Bond Gauge. When they are on standby, it will slowly charge up. When you are playing a Champion that has the Bond Gauge filled, it will gain a temporary 25% final damage boost. I think he said on stream that this would be an important mechanic to get more points.
  • The Champion Raid has 6 stages. In each Stage, you alternate between fighting normal monsters then fighting a boss. This happens 5 times each (for a total of 10 missions per Stage) before you complete the Stage and can enter the portal to go to the next Stage.
  • When you are hit by certain attacks and environmental hazards, you will gain a stack of a Dangerous Status Effect. If it reaches 5 stacks, you will be inflicted with a powerful status effect. You can eat the fruit scattered around the map to heal yourself and cleanse the stacks.
  • The Champion Raid is monthly content. It resets on the first day of every month.
  • In my run on the test server, I reached Stage 2 and played it a bit, and when both of my Champions’ play times ran out, it automatically brought me to the exit map. I got a score of 9460 which rewarded me 9460 Champion Coins. You can always re-enter and try to get a higher score, which will give you additional Champion Coins.
  • These Champion Coins will also be reset on the first day of every month, so you cannot save them up like other currency.
  • You can use your Champion Coins to get a 30 minute buff by using the new beginner skill Champion’s Blessing, available on your Champion characters.
  • The Champion’s Blessing skill lets you choose which stats and what level of each stat that you want. The cost of using the skill is Champion Coins, based on the levels that you selected.
  • You can choose any combination of stats and levels, as long as you have enough Champion Coins.
    • For example, a fully maxed out Champion’s Blessing (Level 5 of all 6 stats) would cost 4000 Champion Coins.
    • Realistically, you wouldn’t choose the ‘Additional Experience Acquired’ stat (which actually has higher costs than the other stats) when bossing so level 5 of the remaining 5 stats would cost 2500 Champion Coins.
  • You need to be careful with this as the Champion Coins can only be acquired from the Champion Raid, which is monthly. So you will need to carefully plan when you use them so you don’t run out of Champion Coins early on and then you’re left without it for the rest of the month.

Basically, the Union Champion system which gives permanent stats to all of your Champions requires no upkeep. Once you have completed a Champion Evaluation on a character, it will gain the corresponding Insignia and will never lose it (unless you remove that character as a Champion). You can gradually strengthen your characters, complete more Evaluations, and get more stats until they are all SSS Rank.

The Champion Raid system which gives stats in the form of 30 minute duration buffs is monthly content. You go in, play as your Champions for [3 x number of Champions] minutes, and try to get the highest score possible to acquire Champion Coins. You can then use these Champion Coins to get 30 minute buffs through the Champion’s Blessing skill, which lets you specifically choose which stats and how much of each stat you want.

Many viewers were asking about a balance patch.

I play cadena, my friend plays wh and luminos, every week we fight limbo, my damage is 45% of the party, so sad. If I left the party they would never get clear.

my hexa is 83k , wh 84k and lumi 86k
