MapleStory 2 Coming Soon?
Today, Nexon released their fourth quarter and full year 2011 financial results. While looking through their website, you can see this! It shows MapleStory 2 as an upcoming product! I think this is the first time we’ve seen this screenshot, so its exciting to think that this game might be released!
Read past the cut for my thoughts, as well as some brief information I thought was interesting~!
This is the same screenshot as above, enlarged. I can spot the chat window, HP and MP bars, as well as some characters fighting some monsters?
I think this pretty much confirms that it is not 2D, but I think that 2D is one the big factors that adds to MapleStory’s charm. Is that just me?
Just MapleStory itself’s lifetime gross sales are over $1800 million, that’s a lot of money!
Dungeon Fighter Online has over $1500, followed by Kart Rider at over $400, with Mabinogi, Counter Strike Online, Sudden Attack, and Atlantica Online not too far behind.
Nexon’s total revenue in 2011 was over $1 billion USD! And as you can see, China makes up the largest part of Nexon’s revenue!

If thou ask me, i find that charm of MS not just for the 2d, also for the… platform genere! Many quest require you to jump the freak out of yourself everywhere.
If i see many platforms, jump feature, and a LOT of neccesity to jump and hack & slash feature, i shall expect this game happily.

making it 3d would have to incorporate mouse controls and other game dynamics that would overly complicate the game
it would also be harder to play wh,bm,x-bow, and basically any ranged character, which would turn some people off.

Think for a second: If MapleStory 2 was side-scrolling 2D, how do you think it would run alongside Maplestory 1? Hint: It wouldn’t, unless it shares no relation to MapleStory.
The only way they can release MS2 without replacing MS1 is if it plays entirely differently.
As far as the whining of ‘Maplestory 1 is good enough!’: Keep playing MapleStory then. Nobody is forcing you to switch.
Also bear in mind that the screenshot is too fuzzy to make enough out of it. It’s possible that it’s isometric 2D, think Ragnarok Online.

But if Maplestory 2 continues the story of Maplestory 1, then it sucks cuz most of the people from Maple 1 wont play it since the actualy like the 2d side-scrolling style.
honestly from an observational perspective, it does look 3d. I mean, why have a curving road, pop out trees, and enemies below you on the screen but still on the same platform. I honestly think that this, like elder scrolls online, will be an altering experience but will sift through who likes the series and who love it. They still are losing a lot of fans with this

I really don’t mind it being a 3D game as long as the character designs don’t look too bad in 3D. Hopefully they won’t make the same mistakes with this that they made with the original Maple.
It would be fun as hell if MapleStory 2 was a third person view game, Hot action and fast paced rather than “Diablo” Dungeon Crawler kind of stuff

I think maple need to stay 2D to be successful. The true is if maple stay 2D then it doesn’t need a new version. It could just keep updating itself. The 2D cartoony look is what make it sell. That said, if this were to goes 3D, I think it’s much better off going with somthing like animated looking when Nexon made ads commercial. Large char size. Or something like the way FF7 was done. From the look of the SS, it look kinda like RO. There is nothing wrong with RO, there are many ppl that play RO. The problem here is that if Nexon make a game that look like other game, then it has no uniqueness in it.

Honestly, I knew this was coming. Think about this from a corporate point of view. Nexon made Maplestory 2D to begin with for a reason.
If you look at what they’ve been doing for the past 2 years, they’ve simply been making everything that they already have better. First, they give us level 120 weapons. Then they allow us to upgrade them extra times with Viscous Hammers. Welcome Hidden potentials~ Looky here, we can now prevent items from blowing up with shielding wards. I forgot to mention Equip Enhancment… level 130 and 140 sets are now available. As if Hidden Pot wasn’t enough, let’s add a 4th tier to it.
Even more inconspicuously, they’ve just been giving us free skills. Blessing of the Fairy, Empress’s Blessing, Will of the Union, Link skills, and probably more to come.
If you can’t tell, there’s not much more that Nexon can do without stacking more wep/magic att onto things. I didn’t even mention all the recent things they’ve incorporated the past few months. The only thing left to add onto a 2D game is to make it 3D. It’s a really big marketing venture. People pay loads of money to upgrade their equipment to the max, now they can pay loads of money to do it in 3D. Sure, most of us love Maplestory as it is; quirky and 2D, but over time the Maplestory 2 will gain players, both new and old. I say that within 2 years time it will be at least 2/3 as big as Maplestory 1, if not bigger.
It’s just the natural progression of things. Nexon is smart, they know what their doing.

I think they could add more lvl’s to Maplestory, like till 100, make the 5th class and then it could be a little more like how it was before BB, since reaching max lvl take a lot of time and will before.
I hope it’s not a point and click. -_- And I hope they implement better controller functions…AND I hope they let us transfer our characters, if not our levels then at least our class, name, and cash items.
I would stay with maplestory the original cuz I love the 2D graphics which makes it different with other games. I hope they will end the project.

According to the screenshot, it doesn’t look like MapleStory 2 will be 3D. Rather, it will be 2.5D or something of that sort.
Lol. I already call Maplestory “2.5D” The overall gameplay just feels like it’s more than 2D.
Personally, I think that this is a fantastic idea. Don’t get me wrong, I agree that Maplestory is one of the few quality mmorpg-sidescrolling-platforms with a HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE amount of memories and progress accumulated throughout the past years. I’ve been playing for maybe six? Anyways, with so much stuff going on in Maple and almost going into a close of making all of those character sets (there’s only an archer explorer, thief resistance, and pirate hero left until they gotta make a new set) and with so much stuff to do too, I’d like to take those same elements by the same makers and keep the same themes into a different game.

Actually, there was a maplestory game for ds but it never came to America. Apparently many weren’t too fond of it and sales weren’t anywhere as close to as planned. Then again, it could be worse. The maplestory anime was crap.

If they make maplestory 2 in 3D, I’m not gonna wanna play. And if they make maplestory 2, they’ll probably stop patching maplestory and adding events, and then I’m not gonna wanna play. They must be idiots, they have tons of other 3D games for people who like that kind of thing, maplestory is simple in 2D, that’s what makes it appealing and that’s what made them so damn much money.
The fact that it’s 2D isn’t what made them money, else why did Ghost Online/Wonderking/etc shut down?
Also bear in mind that ‘3D Games’ isn’t a genre, and the existence of other 3D games isn’t reason not to make one, else we’d not be seeing any of the popular MMOs released within the last..10+ years. You crazy?
MapleStory will continue to get events and updates as long as it remains popular. You’re free to keep playing it, and the existence of a sequel isn’t going to ruin your life or however you seem to be taking this.
Other 2Ds might not be the one which make them money, however MS definitely is one.
You can’t take other unsuccessful 2D games as example here right? Lot of 3D games got shut down too.

MapleStory is one of the most popular free to play games, and is hosted by Nexon, who’ve seen the transition of Dungeon Fighter from P2P to F2P highly successful.
You’d be high to think that MS2 will be anything but free2play. And note that F2P games are only as expensive as you’re willing to make them. You’re not being forced to buy those Miracle Cubes.

You do realize that a sequel coming out doesn’t mean they’re replacing the original with it, right? This is a different game. MapleStory isn’t going to disappear when this comes out.

Of course you will start over. They would lose a lot of potential money if people were able to just pick up and transfer their characters.
They’d also lose a lot, and I mean A LOT, of customers. Everyone put their work into Maplestory, and if it gets shut down and they release this one, nobody is gonna want to start over.

Maplestory should be 2 and a 1/2 D like Dragonica/Dragon Saga. Dragonica is side-scrolling just like MS but you can also go up and down making it 4 directional rather than 2 directional. Dragonica’s gameplay is amazingly fun and smooth especially the PvP but what really sucks is the imbalanced classes, grinding at high levels, and the fourth job is still not complete after so many years. If MS2 has the gameplay of Dragonica but the setup of MS1 it’d be the best mmorpg game ever.
And Dragonica has SOOO MANY BUGS!!! >_<

Is it just me or do you se the purple and yellowish-orang enumbers on top of heads? The purple looks like its on a monster, so i assume it’s damaged dealt, and yellow looks like its on a characters head, so is that damage taken?
Also doesnt the map look kind of weird? like they’re on a sphere, since the worl looks like its distorting around them… wonder if thats a glitch in the engine that running it? and i hope we can move the Hp bars and stuff, im so used to it being on the bottom, or top left due to video games XD.
Anyone else notice how similar the two maplestory screenshots are? They looks like the same map almost, the hills are placed in roughly the same spot, and the plants are placed a little similarly. Test map, or will the maple world be roughly the same, just in a different engine?

I dont mind a second maple story but i do have a problem with the 3D… If think they should launch a new maple story with the old qualities of it, and i mtalking about 4-5 years ago when people actually pqued and stuff. I’m guessing that augmented reality is next. Take a tablet computer, access the upcoming Super Wi-Fi networks, and you connect anywhere you want, and you will play with objects super imposed on your screen. BTW, tablet computers are starting to compete with traditional computers and laptops, so they are often improved, such as the new 19 ounce e-paper. Imagine that, with the processing capability of our laptops today, coupled with long ranged Wi-Fi, and you get the basis of what a game in the future needs to be platformed on.

I think it’d be stupid if they actually decided to replace MS with “MapleStory 2”. Something that well-established (their numbers don’t lie) shouldn’t be tampered with – it’s a cash cow, and cash cows don’t grow. While they might not have the best grip on gameplay “savvy” (as evidenced by the discontent by some players about some revamps), I hope they have enough business sense to not mess with MapleStory’s original formula.
guys, stop hating so much. This idea looks fantastic, as maplestory has evolved with so much content, it almost feels like it could go full unless they add ideas really new or make a new set of classes, even though that that’d be milking the concept. If Maplestory 2 was to be released, it would probably be a separate game than maplestory, allowing you to keep with the old one or play a new set with new ideas. for those familiar with artix entertainment, that’s like battleon vs adventure quest worlds.
It’d be nice to see what they’d be capable of with a new format and world and reshape how we played through previously. Besides, there’s a ridiculous amount of haters in ms right now as well. New Nexon content to bring back a fresh new layout is fantastic.
