Phantom of the Past!
A new PV has been released on the MapleStory homepage! It reveals a bit more of Phantom’s past, including Shinsoo, Aria, and Freed. I guess Nexon did dub over this video for the MapleStory Justice trailer!
As you can see, Aria is holding the Skyia, a treasure mentioned in the Phantom tutorial, does this mean that Aria was the Empress? Before Cygnus?

So Aran’s cursed, sealed in ice and hit with laser guided amnesia when he wakes up. Evan’s predecessor was killed. Mercedes had to watch everything and everyone she cared about freeze for centuries, only to wake up powerless to do anything about it and, because she retains her memories, she knows full well just how screwed the Maple world is. Phantom never bothered fighting against evil, which allowed it to kill the woman he loved without him ever getting a chance to say goodbye. Then there’s the Demon Slayer, one of the Black Mage’s generals who, ironically, had the Black Mage’s forces kill his entire family, burn his house and town to the ground and reduce him to noobletness. Let’s not even get into what tragedy will have befallen the pirate heroine. Even Cannoneer got attacked by a Balrog, stranded on an almost deserted island and stuck with a stalker monkey who may or may not do inappropriate things to him while he sleeps. Then there’s the past mistakes of the Cygnus Knights as well as the possibility that the motivation for their very existence is flawed and corrupt. And the regular resistance recruits all start their adventures by stumbling onto human experimentation and almost getting killed by the Black Wings.
Is it just me, or is Maple getting dark and edgy? Because all, of the new characters have a stoneface inducing backstory. Back in the day it was just some bored youths whacking snails for fun and profit. Now there’s death, despair and a battle for the fate of an entire world. When did it all go wrong?
You forget the Dual Blade’s backstory, where they’re essentially villains trying to murder the Dark Lord because Lady Syl thinks he killed her father in order to become the thief instructor. And that no one actually trusts them, which is why all the thief instructors past the Dark Lord give Dual Bladers so much crap before they advance them.
You forget that the Empress Cygnuss and her knights basically went LOLNOPE at *helping* the Resistence too. No Cygnus Knight will step foot Edelstein canonically.
This game! It has plot! Who knew.
aria is the pirate hero!
Dang…this is a really nice storyline, actually this whole “hero and black mage” story is very interesting. They should reveal the details of that battle between them, not just “they fought, and sealed away the black mage”. We want details, DETAILS!!!

I’m not sure why but this Phantom guy reminds me so much of Kaito Kid/Phantom Theif Kid/괴도키드 from Detective Conan/Case Closed/명탐정 코난 Other than the fact that they are both thieves they look nothing alike even the stories are different and yet they seem to be very similar in some ways like their personality and confident(or somewhat arrogant)smiles

Five heroes fought against the Black Mage during the war. Mercedes, Aran, Phantom, (L) and Freud. The first three were all still in good enough shape to survive, although they all got frozen in ice for centuries. What happened to the pirate heroine whose name begins with L has yet to be revealed, but will be eventually next year. Howeber, Freud and his dragon Afrien died because they were too weak to withstand the curse. All that remained was a dragon egg, which Evan later found. Evan isn’t the name of a class, though. The Hero classes are all named after the singular character they represent. There’s canonically only one of each, while there are many explorers, resistance and knights. Out of all the Heroes, Evan is the only one who wasn’t around during the war. Their names are also supposed to spell MAPLE, but Freud’s name doesn’t begin with an E because he’s dead and unplayable.
As for how the Heroes came to be in the present:
Mercedes was thawed by the curse weakening.
Aran was also thawed by the curse weakening.
Phantom was thawed by the ghost of his dead Empress lover Aria, whom he failed to save, in order to beat down the Black Mage again.
(L)’s fate is unknown, but (L) will either be thawed replaced.
Evan was chosen by Mir, Afrien’s offspring, and became the new Magician Hero since Freud and Afrien were too injured to survive the Black Mage’s curse and they both died centuries ago.
So the one in the video is Freud and not the current Evan?
Freud = Original magician hero. He died from the Black Mage’s curse, as we see in the Mercedes storyline (https://orangemushroom.wordpress.com/2011/07/15/kmst-ver-1-2-392-mercedes-storyline/).
Evan = The dude who found the Onyx egg and got a dragon.
Same thing for the Pirate Hero, Testonen is dead but someone will replace him.
Actually, the pirate hero of the past was Testonen, Kyrin’s father. Chances are the new pirate hero will be a successor like Evan.
Testonen? Where did you hear that (Which quest)? Isn’t Kyrin a fairy because her father was the past hero?
Yeah, there was an quest line found in GMS with english dialouge and Athena even mentions Kyrin wnating revenge with Mercedes questline.

I’m spectating that Aria was killed by a commander of the Black Mage. It would be interesting to find out if the commander was the Demon Slayer. A real interesting plot should follow for Phantom then.
General Hilla killed Aria. Demon Slayer was a jerk, but considering the Black Wings burnt his village to the ground and killed his entire family, he and Phantom would probably get along as well as previously mortal enemies could.
I think it was Orca/Su that killed Aria, not Hilla.
Why do I keep thinking of Guilty Gear when I see the name Aria? Plus, the update name is Justice. Damn.

This story ain’t DEEP, GENUINE or BEAUTIFUL.
It’s CLICHE.
How come Nexon always comes up with ideas regarding their new jobs? It’s actually pretty simple, they rip off something. It’s been butchered fuckzilion of times already so it’s just sad to watch such thing.
All they do is make a new, flashier and more overpowered job with a storyline literally ripped off their new media of entertainment, be it a book or TV and people still buy it.
They could shit on your plate and call it a pirate hero and you people would still eat it. Now this is sad, watch some movies, read some books and you’ll notice how shit Maple Story is now.
I agree that this story is cliche, but I thought that the Mercedes’s intro information seemed to be pretty original and some what deep and depressing.
Regardless of how cliche it is, if it still sells, it’s good enough. Who the hell gives a damn if they rip off of other things? You can only go so far with originality in a storyline and Maple is way past that mark. If you can’t deal with it then good riddens, Maple won’t miss you if you leave.
But of course it sells, if it’s aimed to 10 years olds.

I also think bits of Freud’s backstory take a nod from Dragonheart. The whole “human and dragon as one soul” thing sounds like Einon merged with Draco, except here Einon doesn’t go evil. Yet the bond between the two is still the same.
I forget if Afrien was the one who got hit by the curse or not. But if he was, then it would easily connect to Dragonheart.
“As the heart binds Einon and me in life it binds us in death. You’ve seen that it is! Through the heart we share each other’s pains and power. But on my half, it’s the life source. For Einon to die, I must die.”
Replace Einon with Freud, and heart with soul; that’s pretty much the relationship between Freud and Afrien in a nutshell.

But in all seriousness, to tose who think it’s cliche: it’s Maple! It doesn’t matter how many times it’s reused; as a fanfic writer, it matters how properly it’s execturd.

And realistically, anything that could be thought of, has been thought of. There is little to no room for complete originality in this world. You can take another idea and modify it, but it still remains the same at its root.
In storytelling, complete originality is inconceivable unless you’re a brainstorming genius and have the capacity to keep your story together while you pull off your idea. The problem with some original ideas is that they fail to keep the story glued together using these elements, and the whole thing falls apart because of this.
Modifying cliches is the new norm. Don’t deny it, because you only need to look in this vast archive we call the internet.
Hey max can you give me some hints on what to max for phantom, here is what I thinking to do:
1st job: Max everything, just quick evasion that stay 5 (or 6, depending on how much sp you get when you job advance)
2nd job: Max everything, correct if I am wrong but I think you can max everything at 2nd job.
3rd job: Max everything, just flash and flee that stays 10 (or 11), can you give me a tip on this one I would like to have 30% evasion rate but don’t know which not to max. And how much sp Phantom gets when job advance one, three…? Thanks in advance!

The build helped gonna use it too 🙂 a question: If I a steal an adventurer skill that is level 5 (of 20) and my Talent of Phantom Thief is level 1, If I increase my TOPT to level 20 will my adventurer stolen skill increase too?
i think it only increses to the skill level of the person u stle it from
so if my topt is at 10
and the person i steal from , lets say heal, is at 5
then heal will forever stay at 5
and if heal is at 20
and topt is at 10
then heal will be 10 for me

Yes it will increase as you put points into ToPT, but it will not go past level 5 because that is the original skill level of the skill you stole. You’d have to find someone with over 5 Heal to increase it past that hard limit.
So let see if I understand, you increase TOPT so you can steal a higher level skill. Example if I have TOPT level 20 I can steal a level 20 Heal, and when the stolen skill is level 30 and TOPT is 20 it will be 20. And if the skill is 5 and TOPT 20 it will be 5 l, right?

With Phantom’s proportions and style in the animation, I don’t see why Nexon still insists on using a super-deformed (or “chibi” as some would say) style, aside from sticking to in-game graphics.
But they COULD go into more cartoon/anime style and still look good!
Oh so the current Empress Cygnus and Aria are different people? I just assumed Aria was the NAME of the Empress Cygnus – her title. And then when she ‘died’ she went to sleep, and has been sleeping since as the current Cygnus ;o but omg I love this story!
