CMSt ver. 071 – Root Abyss & New Bosses!
This post title might seem a bit random, but actually it’s very surprising! China MapleStory’s test server has released the new area and bosses of Root Abyss before kMSt! This area is the one hinted at with all of these boss previews and even one of the last Inkwell’s Secret Diary entries! I don’t know why CMSt got it first, but I’ll try my best to cover it~ It’s really really interesting because it is really important to the storyline of MapleStory~
Please note that many of the translations I am using are from Hadriel of Southperry from this thread, so huge thanks to him for posting them!
The new area is located in Sleepywood actually! You can see the root of a large tree off the path to Ant Tunnel.
My guess is that once you approach it with your character in game, you’ll fall into it (obviously).
You will then find yourself in the Root Abyss! It’s a new area with 4 new bosses! This area is for levels 110 to 160. There’s only one map in between each boss so it’s not that great for training though.
Each boss has two different modes, one for levels 110 and over and the other for levels 140 and over.
You will be awakened by a girl named Alice. Now… there’s something special about her that you should know.
Alice is the World Tree, the Transcendence of Life for the Maple World! After the battle with the Black Mage, her powers became very weak. She rested in the Root Abyss, at the centre of Victoria Island, to regain her powers, since the area is filled with life energy.
However, it seems that Alice has been sealed in the Root Abyss! To help her, you’ll have to defeat the four bosses in each gate.

You reluctantly bring Alice to Ereb, because she has been sealed for so long and has not been able to see the world. However, you and her both know she will be safer there under the protection of Cygnus and Shinsoo. After Alice begins her sleep, Nineheart tells you that the Sealing Guardian has been revived. Who this is we don’t really know… but it probably means a new story will begin soon!
And we finally know where this picture takes place, in Root Abyss! More interesting is that we now know the identity of this mysterious person, none other than Demon’s brother, Damien!
Now let’s get into the bosses. First off, in the path to the left, lies Queen City. It’s really creepy with all the skulls and spiderwebs…
The boss for this area is the Bloody Queen. Definitely scary… I bet her head spins around to reveal something super hideous, haha.
The area to the bottom left leads to the Afternoon Tea Garden.
This is Pierre, another boss in the Root Abyss. I wonder what type of skills he uses…
The next area is called the Crack in Time, and it definitely looks that way.
Banban (name TBD) is the boss for this place. I guess he can control the power of time, although how a chicken got that power I don’t know, haha.
The last area is the Abyss Cave. This one definitely looks like it’s the big boss zone, haha.
This is the boss, Belum (again, name TBD). He’s huge! And I wonder if he’s really a dragon or a worm… we don’t really know what’s below the rocks.
This video (thanks to forad999!) shows the fights against Banban, Pierre, and Bloody Queen! They all have the Death Count system, and the items they drop are Epic if you fight them in their 140+ form. They all have some pretty unique skills compared to the past Maple bosses. They really give importance to your positioning in fights rather than raw damage.
Banban can make the timer advance a few seconds, I think it’s whenever you stand on that clock that he summons. He drops a hat that looks like his head, haha. Pierre has his tornado that leaves DoT tiles on the floor, he also drops a hat. Bloody Queen does a slash attack that inflicts different status effects on you, from her you can get a chair that looks like the one in her map.
Finally, Belum, who seems to have the most annoying fight of all. Every few seconds he will disappear into the ground and reappear, making it really hard to do damage to him. He can also fly out of the ground! He drops a hat like Banban and Pierre.

Maybe he is the mysterious “Sealing Guardian”? lol dont know why he would be though and he would have been too you to seal Alice down there right after the Black Mage was defeated. Then again it is said that she went down there to rest first and was then later sealed down there.

Adding maturity to this game is the worst idea ever. I would say that 80%+ of this game’s population play it because it is cute. If you didn’t want cute you should have played a different game that employs better graphics.

If you took your head out from underneath the ground and ignored the cliches that were inevitable to any half decent game, you would know that bloody has more important HISTORICAL connotations than that of it’s colours.
You, too, might do well to remember the past — Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is of literary significance, and is referenced in a great many modern works ranging from movies to games to even anime and manga. Sure, ‘bloody’ has more connotations than just ‘red’, but when it is in the name of a queen in an area that references Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in so many, many ways (ranging from the obvious fall-down-a-hole to the less-obvious giant, terrible dragon [for Through the Looking-Glass is so often referenced alongside the first book when making such areas as this, in particular the Jabberwocky]), it is not incorrect to assume a connection to the color even if the Queen of Hearts and the Red Queen are not exactly the most GENTLE folk in the world of literature — or mayhaps I should say it is not incorrect BECAUSE they are so inclined to inflict harm.
While not everything in MapleStory is a reference to other works, they do occasionally like to throw in an area that does reference something, and to recognize them is half the fun of the area. I look forward to the day this content comes to GMS.

I hope they’re designing it themselves. Like Dragon Warrior. Japan, China, Korea, Global, and Taiwan all making their own content then fusing it together sounds messy but it has been interesting so far. I say keep it coming.

I actually find the fact that Banban is a rooster (not a chicken) to be a nice touch considering they’ve given him temporal powers. After all, while it might not be terribly impressive, it does at least hold some relation to time (the crowing of a rooster being a traditional signal in fiction [and sometimes real life] that dawn has arrived and all that). It could also even be a partial reference to another character from the work, the Dodo.
Only time will tell on that last note, though.

It’s about time MapleStory got something related to Alice in Wonderland, I think most games out there have something at least a little bit similar to this story. And the bosses look AWESOME! They have a new kind of drawing, seem more clear than other sprites in the game and also that Bloody Queen is really creepy, I’m gonna love this area.
Actually MSea had a mini version of Alice in Wonderland as it’s exclusive. Although this is 100x better than MSea’s one which i never actually tried myself. 😛

Hey max, her connection to Ereb is the fact that Cygnus and her knights when to find the world tree when the black mage sprung his trap on them turning them evil and what not. Or am I wrong?
That was only a dream created by the Black Mage to scare Cygnus so she wouldn’t look for power.

WHOA, wait….when did the transcendence’s battle the black mage?!?!?!?!?! I thought it was only the 5 heroes?
Well remember, the black mage attempted to take the power of the other transcendence’s. Although Alice may not have been directly involved with the actual battle itself we have to keep in mind she could still have had a major influence on those events that took place before, during, and after the battle. Not to mention the three transcendence’s may all be connected as each world has just that: three transcendence’s. Light, Life, and Time. It is possible that when one is harmed all three suffer. Maybe no worlds can exist without all three and the the sealing of the black mage (Transcendence of Light) had an impact on the other two as well (Rhine and Alice).
Well, the Black Mage was a Transcendence himself, the Transcendene of Light.
He tried to steal Rhine’s (Goddess of Time, Transcendence of Time) power of Time, remember?
Alice possibly had an impact because she pretty much feels all life in Mapleworld. Because of the number of deaths and injurys in the battle against the black mages, she probably had to use her own power to protect a lot of people from losing their lives.
Also: Remember.
The FINAL battle against the Black Mage contained the five heroes. It wasn’t the only battle.
Before that happened, the Black Mage probably fought the other Transcendences for Power, like Rhine and Alice.
FINALLY THE STORY CONTINUES! I’m totally excited.

Despite the area being a copy of Alice in Wonderland, it actually looks really nice in my opinion. It’s got a much darker tone and ties in surprisingly well with the dark direction the game is slowly taking.

Gasp! There are now void zones?! I’d like to see them damage ****** deal with this. Damage won’t matter as greatly anymore. Survivability (in the case of the death count system) and tactics are going to be key in these battles, not just straight up raw damage. Well played, Nexon.
And did I just see phantom blow and advanced charge blow drop from that chicken-like boss? That’s rare stuff there. I see people in basil, particularly in the paladin forums QQing about there not being ACB skill books in the market, well I hope this fixes it at least a little. Then again, I don’t expect that much stuff drop in the real version since this is just a test server.

I remember when most of those were implemented. It meant exciting new areas and new content to explore. There was an adventurous new frontier feel to it. New content put the ADVENTURE in ADVENTURER. Now it’s all about more power, rather than exploring and enjoying the game. MOAR BOSSES MOAR POWAR! With new areas added only as needed in order to have some place to put them. I also remember when party quests still had value. But that’s another issue entirely.
Suffice it to say, this stuff doesn’t impress. Yay, more enemies to kill. As if the game doesn’t have enough of them already.
I miss the feeling that new content used to inspire, before it started feeling less thought out and more “forced,” as if they’re just adding things because they have to.

I also remember the thrill of exploring new areas, like Korean Folk Town, and Omega Sector, Ariant and Magatia, and Leafre, and Singapore.
I also remember how we didnt have Ultimate Teleport rocks or whatever, and that dude that sells Planes, where we had to wait 10 to 15 mins of traveling between continents.
and I also remember the fun and challenges each PQ had that relied on teamwork and “cooperation” but that was back in Maplers had more “class” and “maturity”
Now its just the complete opposite. They made this game too easy and give aways for all noob players. Not only that but there is sense of multiplayer comradery and community, where everyone acts like selfish antisocial assholes, and treats each other like shit, cus they are just mere strangers

Using the owl of minvera you can already see that they put these into the game but just haven’t realase the bosses which allows you to get these hats i didnt really look at the stats but i still do have my owl of minvera and i share when i get on ms later
