Developers’ Note – MapleStory Reboot Update Introduction!

Developers' Note

A new Developers’ Note has been released, this time talking about specific parts of the MapleStory Reboot update! The first patch of this update will be released to the official server on June 25 and will include the character balancing which has been going on in the test servers so far.

Introduction #1

Hello Maple users.
It’s SY.

Today, since a lot of people have been asking for more information about our summer update after our plan was released, I will be talking about some of the large variety of content and events which will be added in MapleStory’s summer 2015 update “Reboot”.

Maple has already celebrated their 12th year and summer. Including this winter, over 20 large updates have been made for the game. Many people have been asking “can you think of any more updates?”, but our updates are from our imagination, leaving an infinite number of possibilities.

But the most important thing is listening to requests from our users. It is very difficult to decide what we should develop with our limited resources given so many different users’ circumstances and wants. There are many, many factors which affect our decisions.

This summer update “Reboot” is based on two things: things users want and some attempts at a new Maple.

  1. Character reboot (balancing)
  2. Level up frame 2.0
  3. Equipment frame 2.0
  4. New job “Kinesis”
  5. 2D skeleton animation introduction
  6. Reboot server
  7. New Mu Lung
  8. Korean Folk Town reorganization
  9. Giant boss raid “Urs”

Each day of this week, we will be giving out detailed information about each piece of content by talking to the development team.

Today we will be talking with Wonky of the development team about character balancing, level up frame 2.0, equipment frame 2.0, and related details.

1. Character Balancing

SY: Everyone would like to become stronger. However, relative balance between characters is very important to keep an RPG fun. Right now, with this in mind, we looked at all of our previous developers’ notes and saw that we tended to simply buff characters again and again. Our goal now was to bring down some characters’ damage. Depending on the job, we may have even buffed them, and we know there is lots of discussion among users about our decisions. Believe us when we say that we are putting great importance on users’ opinions and our test server patches have and will be taking these into consideration. In addition, for further balancing, we will be continue to ask for user input as well as use our own collected data.

2. Level up frame 2.0

SY: Collecting stronger equipment and levelling are the most basic parts of an RPG but as users get higher and higher, it becomes more difficult. We want to work on increasing the feedback users receive as they level up to make it more fun and so they can feel actual growth.

Wonky: First of all, the new Hyper Stat system will be available starting at level 140. The Hyper Stat system is different than the regular stat system and allows you to raise various combat stats. After level 140, you’ll receive Hyper Stat Points which you can use to increase your combat stats. In particular, you can get stats that previously could only be acquired through equipment, Inner Ability, and other skills, depending on your character’s level. And after the Hyper Stat system is added, the Hyper Skill system will be integrated within it.

Other changes include the amount of Honor you receive per level up. Currently, you get 500 Honor every time you level up, but after this update, you’ll get even more Honor based on your level.

3. Equipment frame 2.0

SY: Last summer, we introduced the new enhancement system Star Force, and this summer we will be reorganizing it again. As I mentioned in a previous Developers’ Note, together with an overall cost adjustment of enhancements we will be adding the Toad’s Hammer system which lets you move an equipment’s enhanced stats.

Wonky:  Some updates to the Star Force enhancement system were added to the test server last week. To increase the cost efficiency of enhancing, we have decreased the costs of the 10th~14th stars. And to reduce the risk of enhancing items which have more than 12 stars, destroyed items will now give Item Traces which hold up to 12 stars of that item. Through these changes, we hope that users’ needs of a less risky enhancement system are fulfilled.

And a new system which allows you to transfer enhanced stats of equipment to the next level of equipment called Toad’s Hammer will be added. Now, you will be able to upgrade to higher level equipment constantly without losing the merit of enhancements to your current equipment. The Toad’s Hammer system allows you to move over an item’s Star Force enhancements, potential, additional potential, and Soul Weapon information to another item which is +1 ~ +10 levels above it. Although the details may change during testing, currently the Toad’s Hammer system’s cost is that 1 star from your item will be taken away and only potential/additional potential up to Epic rank can be carried over. Your Soul Weapon stats will stay the same.

SY: Because of this change, you will now be able to start enhancing your equipment at a low level and inherit those stats as you upgrade your equipment, making it fun to continue to become stronger with every single weapon.

That’s it for today’s information about the Reboot update. Check back tomorrow for more information about the new content.

Please look forward to it.

Thank you.

Very cool to see the developers’ thoughts on some of the upcoming changes. This Developers’ Note also announces the new Toad’s Hammer system which does sound like it will be a good change. It sounds sort of similar to the way Zero’s weapons work, and that is one of the things I thought was really great about that job. You could carry over stats as your sword levelled up and it gave a sense of progression.

What do you guys think so far? How about the new job Kinesis? More information will be released tomorrow, probably about Kinesis and the ‘2D skeleton animation’ which might be an update to the character appearance and effects!

    #website takeover =D

Today we will be talking about 2D skeleton animations and a bit about the new class.

SY: Even though 2D animations was a signature of Maplestory, It is true that it has limitations.
To change this, we have decided to update the graphics system to have scenes with better movement.

Kobo: Hello! I’m the one in charge of the concept, Kobo.
the introduction of the new graphics system is exciting~~
With the original graphic engine, a lot of resources is needed to create the sense of reality and movement.
There are times that it is hard for us to exactly produce what we want, and with the introduction of this graphics engine player motions will become more natural, ad we will be able to create scenes such as grass and trees moving with the wind, fast-moving cars, (new mounts perhaps?) and moving particles. Overall, we have made movement more lively.

Sut-Bar (=D no idea how to say this in English):
Hello, I am the developer in charge of pixel-art, SutBar.
In the past, skeleton animation has been used in 3D games. More recently, it is being used online, on consoles, mobile games, and many different platforms.
With the addition of skeleton animation to Maplestory, it has allowed for monster motions to become more natural and lively.

    2D skeleton animation showcase:

    New Class:
SY: When you think of Maplestory and Summer, the first thing that comes to mind is ‘new job’. However, for 1 and a half years, there hasn’t been a new job. This summer, the new job you’ve been waiting for will come.
Even though Maplestory already has 35 jobs, their combat patterns and effects aren’t very varied, and we don’t believe we have come up with a unique combat pattern.

With this in mind, we unveil ‘Kinesis’, the class that uses monsters for its combat.
    Another teaser:

Wave: Hello, this is my first address.
With the release of the last developers notes, there has been a lot of curiousity. As many of you have speculated, this job uses telekinesis. Kinesis uses telekineis to move monsters around, being able to put it back down or throwing it. With telekinesis, he uses psychic points which have built up, and is able to move massive structures for a powerful ultimate skill. With this, we are anticipating a new pattern of play different to other classes/jobs.

This is not the end! This story starts from FRIENDSTORY (WDF OMG *SPASM*). Starting from the Friendstory scene, with maple world merging, It will take users on a movie-like experience.

This new class with a new story and power, is coming to you. (It says ‘coming to find you’ if you translate it literally. Better lock them doors =D)

    END

  13. MSEA suck
    June 16, 2015 at 8:48 am

Nothing about the economy? what a joke. In MapleSEA the economy is terrible, lack of players and everything needing cash resulted in a huge decline in players. in FM only rooms 1-6 is occupied because you need to pay CASH to open a shop, what a joke. Other games have free auction houses and stuff. Also, lack of mesos sink resulted in inflation. One piece of Cygnus item can cost 2 billion mesos, that is how bad the game is right now.

I am from maplestorySea also. But i think is more likely that asiasoft block out most of those better features that are available in other servers that the problem lying with kms or nexon itself. Well, asiasoft has to live up to their moneysoft reputation 😦

Previously a bootes player. Items was way tooo exp. Msea is like a pay-to-win game. Mesos sink, terrible server, inconsiderate gm’s n the pros manipulating the market price as only thm can solo those high-end bosses. Its pointless staying in msea, if u really wana enjoy the real fun n xperience of mapling, come over to gms.

            KMS is now in deflation.
Most of items are getting cheaper and cheaper.
            Others are not?

no in gms items fluctuate depending on how the hackers feel, yes i said hackers lol. hackers and pros rule the market and they kill any chance of others getting in properly cuz they can sell 1000 clean slate scrolls for 20mil and win were as if you tried that you will not make anything cuz you only have like 5 lol

  16. Nexon is THE BLACK MAGE
    June 16, 2015 at 7:34 pm

I wonder which group of users are the developers ACTUALLY listening to…
the butthurt losers who work on useless, weak-damage characters that complain about dishing high damage like those of special characters like Zero, Night Walker, Wild Hunters, and etc.

This character balancing as with any previous balancing makes no sense at all….

Why nerf the OP characters when you can simply just buff the weaker and shittier characters?

    • Dark Evan
      June 16, 2015 at 9:05 pm

Because the stronger ones are TOO strong… so they do both.
Class loyalty is nothing to be ashamed of…
Damage hoaring, however, IS something to be ashamed of…
I’d rather play a fun, weak class than a boring, strong one….
But balance means I can play a fun, average class instead of a boring, average class…

      • Wishful Thinking....
        June 16, 2015 at 9:54 pm

Playing Maplestory for FUN is like an extremely rare breed of bird amongst a mass dense jungle of damage wh0res and DPS freaks.

I agree with you on what you say, I just hope Nexon will make this Reboot patch more enjoyable without butchering its gameplay with our favorite characters and the soon to be future map and story expansions.

Nexon really needs to crack down on all the illegal activies like meso sellers and the hackers who farm for said meso sellers that’s been creating this game into the crap fest that it has become, as well as the eltist jerkass 200+ players who are so far up in thier own asses with thier damage whoring gear and 2m+ ranges

      • stupid nexon
        June 17, 2015 at 12:21 am

but its so easy now to hit decent dmg 0.0 you want to play a simply game so enjoy your simply game but leave other people alone you think damage whores rage about your low ass dmg? but now people like you fucked yourselves and everyone else by saying why can he hit for so much while im so weak bla bla bla bla bla -_- blame the economy for allowing equips to be so damned expensive rather than the classes that are meant to be the main dpsers of the game i hate people like you the most i would rather make everyone weak so i can play have everyone be weak with me -_-. this is a game but if you put some of the same principles that you do to real life into the actual game then your ass would be one of those elitist jerkass 200+ players who are so far up their own asses with their damage whoring gear and 2m+ ranges as well. i got a char on a new account i made from level 1-200 in a week and that was because i didnt give anything to that char i made it make its own money and scroll its own equips and buy its own weapons but you guys are just to shitty to even try working the market a little cuz your lazy and just want stuff to be handed to you.

    • stupid nexon
      June 17, 2015 at 12:25 am

i agree with you bro it would have been so much simpler to have just made those weaker classes stronger. like they are truly butchering these classes now but we will see maybe it will be justified with this hyper stat thing( probably not, like i seriously doubt it, when it comes to gms it maybe another nx money maker -_-)
