Today, a user discussion was held at Nexon Korea’s office in Pangyo. Only 20 users were invited and they had a lengthy 3-hour discussion with the director and development team of MapleStory about things they had questions about.

I’ll definitely be going over some of the stuff they talked about, but most importantly, after 3 years5th job is confirmed to be coming in 2016!!!

Obviously I wasn’t one of the 20 people that went, so I wanna thank the users of Insoya who posted their notes from the discussion! I won’t be covering every point they mentioned because they might not have been very interesting but I also might have missed some stuff (in which case, please let me know!).

  • They have set up a dedicated team for memory management so they can improve on that this summer.
  • Users mentioned that after level 220, it is way too difficult to level up.
    • The developers said they have been adding high level content gradually, such as Black Heaven, but they are planning on adding a large area for level 200+ characters this year (probably in combination with 5th job).
  • 5th job will be coming this year!
    • The developers mentioned that it was first teased in 2013 with the RED update but it was put on hold until last year when development started again.
    • They want 5th job to give players the ability to defeat Hard Suu/Damien.
  • Users asked what they thought about the maximum damage cap.
    • The developers replied that a damage cap does not make sense in RPGs and so they are planning to remove it with 5th job.
  • Users mentioned that event participation is getting lower due to repetitive events.
    • The developers said it is difficult to continuously differentiate event content but they are trying their best to make them interesting. This year’s 13th anniversary events will be going beyond the existing framework and will hopefully be a new standard.
  • Users asked if there were any thoughts to improve party play since many high level players simply have users afk on ropes while they train.
    • The developers replied that they have looked at it before but they felt it would alienate new players. They would like to improve hunting to be more fun.
  • Mini dungeons were removed due to excessive macro usage inside them. It is quite frustrating but macros/hacks constantly get updated so it is difficult to keep track of them. Monitoring in the Free Market will be increased to help crack down on macros.
  • Users asked about if there are any plans to stop people from hunting Elite Bosses by hanging around low level areas with their friends and stealing them quickly.
    • The developers said this is a bit difficult to fix. They could try and make Elite Bosses into something like the Flame Wolf portal.
  • Users asked when closed areas will be reopened.
    • The developers said they would like to both release new content and update the closed areas. They are still planning to gradually re-open them but they are not very high priority.
  • Users asked what they thought about the lack of players for Urus since many times, it is impossible to get 18 players together.
    • The developers said that Urus was an experiment for them and it did not go as well as they thought it would, so they are trying to change the rewards or add things to improve the player base.
  • Von Leon and Horntail might be updated to use skeleton animations.
  • There are plans to increase the maximum Link Skill limit.
  • Users asked if there are any plans to make it easier to move around Link Skills.
    • The developers replied that they do want to improve on it but if certain limits were removed, then they worry that Link Skills and Character Cards would overlap/be redundant. They are open to increasing the ‘1 per day’ limit though.
  • There are plans to increase the maximum character limit/maximum inventory slot limits, after more high priority stability updates.
  • Users asked if they are planning to change how megaphones cover your buffs, or how Kaiser’s tail and Luminous’ eyes work.
    • The developers replied that they are planning to reduce lag from megaphones and they might add the ability to turn Kaiser’s tail/Luminous’ eyes on/off like Mercedes’ elf ears.
  • Users asked about Star Force and its success/failure chances.
    • The developers said they are continuously monitoring Star Force and will consider changing the success/failure chances if needed.
  • There are no plans to re-add Miraculous Equipment Enhancement Scrolls.
  • Users asked if they can improve the annoyingness of Star Force enhancements.
    • The developers said they might add an option to turn off the minigame before every enhancement.
  • Users asked about the useless/inefficient options when you use Cubes.
    • The developers said that they are planning to do something about this with the 5th job advancement update. It is difficult to decide whether to remove or improve them since many players have already fully cubed their gear.
  • Users asked why they added a 10 minute cooldown on to Heaven’s Door.
    • The developers said having a free resurrection every 3 minutes was too strong, so they decided to add the 10 minute cooldown. They might lower harder bosses’ difficulties to compensate for it.

      I dont know, you max all of yuor skills wayyy earlier than 210, if its 210 the 5th job is in, why did they even bother with lowering 4th job to 100?

      They actually officially stated that the changes to when you earn skill points so that you’d have all of your skills maxed by level 140 were because the new job would be at level 140. That was a year or so ago now though, so that could have changed, and I personally do think that it should be around 160 or so.

      You max all skills at lvls 150-190. Don’t know if Maplestory will balance skill points required to max skills out for all classes.

        I think you can get the 5. job with lvl 150:

        (0) – 10: 0. Job // (10 levels)
        10 – 30: 1. Job // (20 levels)
        30 – 60: 2. Job // (30 levels)
        60-100: 3. Job // (40 levels)

        so it could be possible:

        100-150: 4. Job // (50 levels)
        150-210?: 5. Job // (60 levels)

          There’s really nothing wrong with potential, just the cubes themselves. And even then you can just go on Reboot where you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars for cubes. The only real issue is the trash lines (Looking at you 30% chance to rage when hit or restore 7 mp), but that’s not even a big problem at higher tiers.

            Although, I am one of the cubers I can see where S is coming from. Cubes essentially ruin the game. The damage formula is wrecked. If the damage formula is wrecked then character balance is wrecked. So, all the people saying characters are equal can shove it. There are several characters that will be better at almost everything than other characters with proper cubing even if the other character cubes as well.

      Cubes can die, potential is awesome. I kinda would like to have the hp/mp effects removed though, and I want the facial expression things to be a separate thing that can be applied in addition to other effects, rather than as one of them. It’s a fun little addition to the game to have the player get an effect where they look really happy every time they get hit. I don’t want that gone.

      2mil is the visual cap, it never stops going up. That is how people achieve 50mil CAP per line with skills with low %s like Hurricane.

    They need to nerf elites or better yet remove them from the game. I’m tired of seeing level 100+ players camping at drakes or other popular low level places elites. They should make it so any player that is level around 20+ above the mob level that they get moved to another map when the elite boss spawns or the player cannot pick up drops from monsters 20 levels above them.

    just remove evry single pq and fun event and add more boss where u dont have to do anything just range
    people sud abuse this with more mules wich will make game more fun and enjoyable

    its hard to be “pro” not all know how to buy some perm nx or cubes get some cubes and make cap hits its rly hard

        Actually that comment is highly doubt because SAO will only be playable with the HTC Vive + Kinect. Also SAO The Beginning is not a game, in fact its just a marketing demo. If SAO the Beginning does ever become a game, it will come out estimated around 2025 or longer due to the problem of it becoming a MMO. Now back to maplestory. Maplestory came out in 2003 and it still is constantly being updated.

        If you reply with something about the lucky people in Japan with tested alpha….yeah…they had to do many body scans in order to let them test it out which seems like a pain.

        One last thing, the words ‘no one’ isn’t the correct words to use. The correct word will most likely to be ‘less’ or a word that’s related. When ‘no one’ is said you will mean that the game will die and it will be stopped.

    OMG 5th JOB HYPE

    Was there any discussion if there is to be a Fifth job, what will happen to the standing Hyper skill system? Just saying, Icy Aura is my favorite Hyper, and its the only way for I/L mage to reach max status resist. Literally, its 20 base +20 willpower +25 Cygnus Link. and then +15 for Hyper stats. Makes an exact total of 80, and Icy Aura fills up the rest. No other mage can get that,(for classes like Luminous and Bishop it doesn’t matter) and I don’t wanna lose it.

    Also, no damage cap? at all? And Horntail and Von Leon changes confirmed? Cubes are no longer the piece of crap RNG has to offer? More Skill links? People beating up Hard Lotus and Damien without being some insane Evan?(There is a video, I think that Nexon saw it and was the reason why the class was nerfed a bit in that Kmst patch the other day)

    Also, Big patches are in the summer. So, this might be VERY soon. Fingers Crossed!

      I wouldn’t worry about ice aura. I doubt it will be removed. It might be merged with some other buff skill, but not removed.

      Wow, what a bunch of jerks. But seriously, removing the CAP damage IS stupid. It’ll really end up like Disgaea at this point (saw some dude speak about it on GMS’s forum). Which means people might be able to 1-shot Suu and Damien after a while… Thus making the game even more P2W than it already is.

      Unless they resist the urge of making bosses so powerful they’d make Suu and Damien look like Mano. No, wait, even Disgaea has a damage cap, it’s just it’s very high. But now there might be a way for people to actually get to 500k HP with the 5th job. That’s all there is left, HP/MP and major stats buffs, along a few new flashy skills (or maybe all skills will be attacking skills with passive buffs).

        You realize that even without the damage cap, at a certain point you simply can’t go any higher with your potentials, right? So unless you seriously think that number can get as high as 400 billion, there’s not a single person who would ever be able to one-shot Lotus.

          Nexon is known to make life easier for those who pay (and in a bad way for those who don’t pay), even if it costs a lot. I hope they’ll keep their promise and make sure people who do not pay will have a shot at getting decent gear.

          In a worst case scenario, I see people getting to ridiculous numbers in 2 years. But in the best scenario, maybe people will be less selective about who joins their parties, since they might be able to “compensate” for weaker players in their parties. Only time will tell how good/bad this will be.

            Except that, again, even without a hard cap there’s still a cap on how feasibly high the numbers can go. It doesn’t matter how much people spend, they’re still stuck at some number, however high that number is.

          It’ll never get to a point where they can one-shot bosses. They might kill them in record times, but that’s to be expected with how potentials and high-end gear work.

          What I would like of them is to get rid of the completely useless potentials so non-p2w can at least have an easier time. Then maybe I’d take this game seriously again.

        You are forgetting that up to this point getting even higher damage than what we have currently would consist of class, and complete Rng of cubes, Scrolls, and Starforce on a ton of equips. Even if you were to reach a certain amount of damage, there is still the overall luck of weapon mastery, crit-multiplier, Attack speed, and simply overall timing.
        Just forget trying to one-shot Hard Lotus/Damien for now. At least, until we see what they will do to the potential system, and 5th job.
        To all the people complaining about Heaven’s Door:
        1. We might not even keep all the hypers thx to 5th job. We have yet to determine the effects for 5th job. So chill.
        2. Face it. Heaven’s door was kinda OP, in terms of free Resurrection without any real cost. Sure, its a buff as well, but if you bishops do get to keep the skill, maybe they will fix it so that the buff you get is somehow separate from the change you get right now.

          If I am correct, the maximum you can get in % is 21%, right? Like STR+21%, or all stats+21%. Now, maybe they’ll do something like +40% stats to “encourage” people to pay to get to such high stats, we do not know how far they will go to “encourage” people to get a shot at getting to the highest damage possible.

          Maybe they will do ridiculous things, maybe they won’t. I hope they won’t take awful decisions that are game breaking. At least for now they are doing good.

          Also, I was speaking about the normal versions at least, the hard versions are just devilish.

          Now I wonder just how “bad” the Black Mage will be as a boss, 1-shotting everyone left and right with map wide attacks.

    So now that 4th job skills are no longer endgame skills and 5th job will clearly outperform them, what will become of hyper skills? Will the passives be thrown to 5th job or remain a crutch for 4th job?

    Nexon, please remove the heaven doors nerf, it’s unnecessary and kills the point of the skill. Why make it a 10 minute cooldown for no reason, just revert it back!
    Give bishops big bang more lines ( at least 6 lines ) and range increase so their mobbing is improved.

    If you want to “improve the player base”, then get rid of pantheon (taking boat rides was a pain BUT it forced people to have social interactions and make friends along the way, the boat rides STILL exist HOWEVER pantheon is there so why would anyone use them? Either get rid of the boat rides and ruin maple further or just get rid of one of the big anti social portals such as this) you also ruined pqs, literally commerci pq is the only jam-packed pq around. Makers, make an account or log on your gm and just patrol maple, REALLY patrol it, look all over ludibrium, orbis, el nath, aqaurium, herb town, mu lung, leafre, and just about EVERYWHERE that ISN’T henesys. They’re ALL abandoned. And here’s a huge one I’ll keep on bitching about, BRING BACK PRE BB MAPS!!!! I swear to your god and creator that if you literally get rid of pantheon, only keep tele rocks as ‘cheat travel’ as I like to call it, and bring back the old, extensive, FUN maps to travel in, you WILL without a motherfucking doubt see a rise in the player base. I SWEAR by it. I’ve been playing almost 12 years, I’m from the start of the beta, and I’ve witnessed EVERY SINGLE decline that maple has gone through. The two BIGGEST patches that ruined maple were the big bang patch and RED patch. Also, you should give adventurers the option of choosing old skill sets. It’s fucking obvious BM and MM suck now, as do just about every other adventurer class. You should give players the option to be like “Hey this is what your skills used to look like and different traits you had, here if you WANT to use them, you have to pay mesos (or even NX, you greedy fucks) to switch. But no, I’ll get ridiculed by the fan fuckboy nexon cock sucker douche bags, and nexon itself. Fun fact guys, NEXON did NOT create Maplestory, they BOUGHT OUT MAPLESTORY FROM WIZET BECAUSE WIZET WENT BANKRUPT. SO BEFORE YOU JUDGE ME AND RIDICULE ME JUST KNOW THAT YOU’RE SUCKING THE COCK OF A GREEDY ORGANIZATION WHO’S NO DIFFERENT THAN ACTIVISION TAKING OVER THE CRASH BANDICOOT SAGA.

    You know what? Here’s a brilliant idea Nexon. Instead of ruining maplestory slowly why don’t you do it all in one patch? I got the perfect idea: Just litearlly block or delete or remove every single world continent that isn’t victoria. Only leave victoria island but don’t stop there, get rid of kerning, perion, ellinia, and even fucking sleepywood, who goes to those places anyways? It’s all about henesys. Just leave henesys and it’s outskirt maps, so make the entire game have only about 5 maps in total surrounding and including henesys, and then get rid of the cab in the town, along with all other npcs, BUT, leave Dimensional mirror, ONLY Dimensional mirror. Then have every single possible fucking pq you can do IN that mirror, as well as the event hall, can’t forget that. That way everyone is forced to play the dullest, most boring bullshit game in the world. That IS your goal…right? Or is it all about the money you steal from cubes? Just imagine everyone sitting in henesys, cubing away to go do a pq. That literally IS what this game is now, only with many more maps that no one has any use for, because they’d rather spend money on cubes and other stupid shit to make them pay to win. Just put the game out of it’s miser y Nexon, just fucking end it.

    Another really quick fun fact for all the fuckboi fanboys: Every 2 years, Nexon hosts a realllllllllly small event that’s barely mentioned, which brings back “Old maple maps” in the dimensional mirror, you can actually go to HHG1 and what-not, but they’re not authentic maps, however they’re still the old maps that we were used to seeing. Why do they do that? They FUCKING KNOW WE WANT IT BACK!!!!!” And they still ruin the game.
