KMST ver. 1.2.192 – The First Adversary & Skill Changes

This week’s test server patch includes the new boss, the First Adversary, as well as surprise skill balancing! In the Maple Now, Director Changseop also stated that this balancing will continue in the next couple of months and he gave a roadmap for content until October.
Maple Now (25.08.14)
The First Adversary
- The First Adversary is a new boss in Odium. You can enter in a party of up to 3 players.
- As mentioned in the showcase, the story is about when players are receiving the power of the Heart of the World, the First Adversary appears and tests the player to see if they are worthy.
- To fit the concept of the First Adversary, it uses multiple weapons like a warrior, magician, and archer’s. They added some fun easter eggs as well that aren’t in the test server but will be in the official server.
- The boss is designed around parrying, which is a common concept in action games. You will receive a guard skill called Immortal Will, which you must use well to react to the First Adversary or various environmental factors. If you parry attacks properly, you will fill up the gauge and as the gauge goes up, you get final damage (and vice versa, if you fail to parry, the gauge will go down and you will lose final damage).
- The boss is a bit arcade-like in that the game is obviously a 2D side-scroller and they tried to maximize the fun of battles in that aspect.

- In terms of rewards:
- Immortal Legacy – a new flameable medal, is the key reward.
- Ancient Eternal Armor Box – can choose between Eternal hat, top, bot, or shoulder.
- Connected Ancient Resolve – can exchange 10 for an Eternal hat, top, bot, or shoulder.
- Adversaryroid
- First Adversary’s Soul

- There will be a boss clear event as well. It’s similar to the previous ones but this time, they wanted to put more of an emphasis on clearing the boss at all during the event period rather than focusing mostly on the first clearing parties.
- Clear Easy Mode or higher – <Where Wills Meet> Chair
- Clear Normal Mode or higher – <Legendary Adversary> Riding
- Clear Hard Mode or higher – <Legendary Adversary> Effect, <First Adversary Chat Bubble/Name Tag> Ring
- Clear Extreme Mode or higher – <Succeeding Will> Title, <Adversary’s Fleeting Thoughts> Chair
- The first 3 parties that clear Extreme Mode – Battlefield of Proof Custom Background Voucher, 5m Maple Points Voucher
- When Extreme Mode is cleared for the first time, everyone can claim rewards – 2 4x Experience Coupons (30 Minutes), 4 VIP Sauna Entry Tickets, 10 VIP Boosters, Adversary’s Hair Accessory Voucher
Events

- A lot of characters made in the June update are sitting around level 270~280, and these events are aimed at giving proper rewards to those players.
- The Blooming Evernia event requires you to hunt monsters within your level range, and for every 5k mobs, you can get 2 Golden Springs (basically VIP Boosters). As players complete this event, they’ll work together to fill up a shared gauge that unlocks further rewards.
- The Frontier Pass has been added, as a successor to the Challenger Pass. This pass can be applied in any world, not just Challengers World. However, it’s still focused to assist the growth of characters created in this summer update, so it can only be used on characters created after that. It lasts 3 months, until November 19.
Cash Shop
- The new Master Label: Master Chaos set has been added.
- The First Half of 2025 BEST Premium Coupons will be added that include the top 10 hairs and faces that players purchased in the first half of the year.

- You can now open multiple Royal Style Coupons at the same time, and you can now open them directly in the Cash Shop. There’s also a fancy gacha animation now (you can skip it if you want).
- You can now turn off the effects of cape and weapon Cash items. It may not work with some older items that were not designed with this in mind, but for most recent items, you can turn off the effects separately.
UI Reorganization
- The Friends UI and Party UI have been reorganized.
- For the Friends UI, there are three tabs now.
- Friends – you can have up to 200 friends. You can search through friends. In addition to online/offline, there is now an away status for players that haven’t moved in a while. It now displays the channel and map that your friends are on directly.
- Friend Requests – you can now more easily check your friend requests as well as friend requests you sent to other players.
- Blacklist
- For the Party UI, there were a few changes.
- The size and design were changed to match the new UI.
- You can now check party members’ Combat Power directly in the UI.
- You can press the blue arrow to use the follow feature more easily.
- On the left, there is a status indicator to make it more clear to see if a party member is online, offline, or in a different location.
- The Chat Window UI has been updated. You can change the transparency now.
Improvements
- You can’t drop the Genesis Weapon anymore.
- Certain consumable items can be stacked in a higher number per slot.
- Characters with a Hyper Burning effect can now use Tera Blink regardless of the event period (they are now linked together instead of being separate events).
- A shop has been added to Maple Home where you can buy furniture to show off LIMITED label items as well as extract Maple Home themes (namely, the Riverview Penthouse from the Golden Safe event).
- A lot of Maple Home furniture has been added, such as new boss furniture for Limbo/Kaling/Baldrix/First Adversary.
Combat Experience Improvements
- This will take place in the August patch but continue in the September and October patches as well. This is because this time, they did not touch all of the jobs at the same time, only 18 jobs will be changed in this patch. The remaining jobs will be worked on in the next two months.
- They decided to do it this way because after reviewing gameplay from June and July, they knew there were many fundamental parts of classes that they needed to revise and problems they needed to fix, and it would be much more in-depth than previous skill changes. They knew they wouldn’t be able to do them all at once in a timely fashion. So in order to implement these changes as fast as possible, they decided to release them in parts instead of holding them back until everything was ready.
- Of course, for jobs that won’t receive changes until September or October, it feels bad but they ask for your understanding that they thought doing it this way would provide the most enjoyment to the most players as fast as possible.
- There are three main goals of these combat experience improvements.
- Actively improve the structure of each job.
- Rather than doing smaller temporary changes, they want to make fundamental improvements to each job.
- Some jobs have main skills or skill systems that don’t fit the current combat meta or don’t provide the intended combat experience. It would be too hard to improve them just by making numerical changes or updating one or two skills at a time.
- Reduce the gap between theoretical and actual damage as much as possible.
- They have values based on their testing and methodologies that comprehensively consider factors such as damage, synergy, survivability, control difficulty, etc. However, these values are clearly different from what players feel when they’re actually playing the game.
- They want to actively improve this so that jobs’ real damage is as close as possible to their theoretical possibilities.
- Improve the responsiveness of controls across all jobs.
- This became a bigger issue this year as many players have returned to MapleStory. Long-time players probably don’t find MapleStory’s controls that uncomfortable because they’re used to it, but for new players, it may feel awkward and stiff, due to things like skill action delay.
- Some jobs have action delays that are longer than what the current combat meta require, so they can’t respond to boss mechanics properly.
- They want to do a large-scale overhaul to all jobs to improve this responsiveness. It’s not just lowering action delays, for example if a job’s main attacking skill is changed, all damage aspects have to be rebalanced and some skills/linking/overall combat mechanisms may need to be redesigned. In this sense, it’s a big change just like the other two points.
- Actively improve the structure of each job.
- There are four jobs that have changed quite a bit in this update.
- Lara
- Dragon Veins have been removed, which could be considered Lara’s main feature. When it first came out, they wanted to make the combat more interesting by tying it to terrain. But now, it became a shortcoming due to the RNG of environmental factors. It also factored into the gap between theoretical and real damage.
- Lara’s skills have been reworked to function without Dragon Veins.
- Blaster
- At first glance, it may look like Blaster didn’t change that much, but in terms of control, there were a lot of changes. Blaster is a character is difficult to control, and being able to continuously manipulate and cancel the skills well is what makes a good Blaster. They respect that aspect of the class and tried not to touch those parts too much.
- However, when you look at how it plays, it requires charging for a short time then stopping the movement continuously. It was closer to being complicated and stiff rather than fun, so they decided to completely remove the charging aspect of Ducking and Sway to make cancelling more fluid.
- For Hammer Smash, you had to mix it in to all of the linked skills to get the most out of it, so for the non-burst DPM, they made it less stressful. You still mix it in for the burst cycle but for regular DPM, you can forego it without a big loss.
- There are many expert Blaster players and while they approached the changes to its controls cautiously, if they play it on the test server and share opinions, they will listen carefully and make additional changes as needed.
- Flame Wizard
- He started off with apologizing for the many mistakes they made when adding Flame Wizard’s 6th job skills and various updates to its skills.
- This time, they tried to solve all of Flame Wizard’s problems at once with overall changes.
- First of all, the main skill Orbital Flame, it looks like it’s a keydown moving skill, so to match its appearance, you can now move while using it.
- Infinity Flame Circle has been remade, completely removing the stacking concept into a regular keydown burst skill that is used every 2 minutes. FW is a job that already has to use multiple skills with short cooldowns and there was no need to increase the combat complexity further. To avoid nerfing the hunting aspect by using 1 stack at a time, Inferno Rise Fire Lion’s range has been changed to be a similar attack.
- Phoenix Drive has been changed from buffing the main keydown skill into a whirlwind that follows the character so it can be more synergistic with Infinity Flame Circle and now only needs to be used every 2 minutes.
- Archmage (I/L)
- I/L doesn’t have as many changes as the previous three jobs but it was still reworked. I/L was previously a really effective grinder but that utility has decreased a lot nowadays so they decided to take the class in a different direction.
- Ice Age has been removed and replaced with a new skill called Frost Arc, that deals additional attacks whenever your Freeze stacks and lightning skills interact with each other, I/L’s core mechanic.
- Lara
- They know these are big changes and it might take some time for players to adapt to them. However, they felt that if they didn’t make fundamental improvements like this, the problems would just keep accumulating.
- There were changes to many jobs but also to some common skills.
- There is a new skill called Ring Exchange that lets you swap between two special skill rings. They thought a lot about whether or not it would be right to actively encourage the usage of multiple skill rings but some classes already think of it as ‘normal’ to do so, and even if they denied that, it exists and they decided that improving this would reduce the gap between theoretical and real damage. You can now swap between 2 skill rings without having to open your inventory. It’s not just convenience, it’s actually a major combat change. If you swap rings, there is a 5 second cooldown on Ring Activation to discourage the usage of multiple skill rings in a single burst.
- The Adventurer Magician common skill Infinity has been changed into a passive skill rather than a stacking skill. They changed it because they thought the difficulty of having to time your burst to be used at the peak of the damage buff was too difficult and changing it could reduce the theoretical damage gap. This skill’s utility also changed based on things like event temp stat skills’ buff duration which was awkward.
- The Cygnus Knight common skill Empress Cygnus’ Blessing has been changed into a regular burst buff skill rather than a stacking skill.
Boss Systems and Rewards Reorganization
- These changes will also continue in the September and October patches.
- He started with explaining a little bit about why they’re making these changes.
- Their most important task for the second half of this year and going forward into 2025 is to keep the new and long-time players continue playing the game. With the various fast changes and accelerated event rewards they have been providing, they have been losing control over the game economy, value of items, challenge goals, and gameplay motivations. If they don’t get a hand on it now, there is a risk that the value of players’ gameplay, items, and the game’s economy will collapse very quickly.
- They decided that they needed to address this issue, and along with this August patch, they will continue to work on this for the rest of the year. The changes made in August aren’t necessarily going to have big effects right away, they’re moreso things that have been adjusted ahead of time.
- This patch, the First Adversary will be released. And more bosses are likely to added quickly in the near future, so they are taking preemptive measures to avoid further problems from occuring at that time.
- There are three major changes to boss rewards in this patch.
- Remove the need to defeat more than 12 boss monsters per week (which is the limit of Power Crystals you can sell per week).
- Once you defeat 12 weekly boss monsters, you will no longer be able to enter any other weekly bosses.
- Many players won’t feel this change yet, but as they add more bosses (and they are planning to add more within the second half of this year), the fatigue of having to run extra bosses increases even if you can’t sell their Power Crystals because of those bosses’ potential drops.
- In addition, as higher tier bosses are added, the lower tier bosses become more meaningless as ‘boss content’ for stronger players. This has accelerated even more with the addition of Ascent skills where you can instantly clear bosses just with those. The gameplay is not fun and they want to fix this ahead of time.
- For bosses below Black Mage, the drop rate of Pitched Boss accessories will be slightly lowered.
- Higher-tier bosses that did not drop Pitched Boss accessories will now drop the Chaos Pitch Black Accessory Box.
- This is to alleviate the issue where you still needed to defeat lower tier bosses because of their drops, even if you already had defeated 12 bosses with more valuable Crystals.
- In addition, the difficulty of defeating bosses below Black Mage has been significantly lowered over time compared to when they were first released. Because of this, the supply of Pitched Boss items is increasing much faster than they expected. High-tier bosses such as Hard Limbo, Hard Baldrix, and Extreme Kaling will have a high drop rate and easier bosses will have a lower drop rate. This will move the supply generation of these items to players that are challenging stronger content and make it more stable.
- Hard and Extreme Suu will no longer drop the Damaged Black Heart. This is more of a gameplay-based measure rather than an economic measure. After adding Extreme Suu and the permanent Complete Under Control heart, they decided that the heart slot item growth path has changed from what they originally designed. Now that a BIS permanent heart has been released, they thought it would be okay to remove this temporary heart. They have also been constantly providing Fairy Hearts in events which are a permanent heart that can be used before Complete Under Control. In addition, looking at the long run, hard bosses have been getting easier and will only continue to get easier. The Black Heart is very cost-effective and it would only get more cost-effective compared the other Pitched Boss set. This is why after some deliberation, they decided to remove the Black Heart.
- Starting next week, you can only defeat 12 weekly bosses. After that, you can’t enter any more bosses. So there’s a chance that you may defeat lower tier bosses first and then not be able to enter the higher tier bosses. They will add a notification but that’s not enough, so he said to remember to be really careful and start with the higher tier bosses first to avoid this problem.
- Proactively prevent situations where strong players would bus weak players in bosses they couldn’t clear on their own to get additional rewards.
- MapleStory is a game where the ultimate goal is to defeat the highest difficulty boss with the fewest number of party members.
- They don’t encourage this sort of gameplay where players would bus weak players to get additional rewards, don’t like that it’s more efficient than challenging the higher difficulty, and they think it is a negative factor for gameplay in the long run.
- The 12 boss limit will naturally eliminate bussing from a Power Crystal perspective, but there is another motivator relating to Eternal equipment.
- Kalos and Kaling’s Eternal equipment piece drops will be changed from individual rewards to party-shared rewards. 6-person party clears will generate less Eternal equipment but if you’re soloing or doing the bosses in a small group, you’ll get more so there are pluses and minuses.
- This phenomenon is most common in Chaos Kalos, where 40% of the total Eternal equipment piece drops are from players that have dealt less than 5% of the damage in 6-person parties.
- Adjust rewards based on their difficulty and tier after boss changes.
- This is something they have been doing consistently, and didn’t take much work this time, but it will continue in the future.
- This time, the First Adversary has been added to the midgame, and certain rewards have been adjusted. The change to Pitched Boss accessory drop rates are also part of this.
- Easy Kalos and Kaling will no longer drop Eternal equipment pieces.
- Normal Kalos’ Grindstone of Life drop rate will be decreased.
- Kalos, Kaling, and the First Adversary’s Eternal equipment drops will now allow you to choose between the Eternal hat, top, bot, and shoulder.
- Remove the need to defeat more than 12 boss monsters per week (which is the limit of Power Crystals you can sell per week).
Conclusion
- Improving the combat experience as well as the various economic reforms (including the boss reward changes) are all ultimately things that they are trying to do to provide an enjoyable service for a long time.
- There may be some measures that are difficult for players to understand why they are being taken, but he said that he believes that both empirically and personally, these things must be built up over time to create a game that can be in-service for a long time.
- They won’t be implementing these changes without saying anything. Just as he explained in as much detail as possible about the boss reward and combat-related changes in this Maple Now, when there are any changes like this in the future, they will provide as much information as possible and work together to build an enjoyable and healthy game.
- They’re planning exciting and big updates for the next few months, and they haven’t even started talking about November yet.

- Immortal Legacy
- Exceptional Hammer: Medal
- Boss Reward Adjustments
- Special Skill Ring Equip System Improvements
- New Boss: The First Adversary
- September
- Level 280 Epic Dungeon: Nightmare Wonderland
- This is a new Epic Dungeon focused on Baekyeon with a concept related to Odium.
- As mentioned before, they are focusing on characters made in June and those players tend to get slower progress in the late 270s/early 280s section, so they want to add a level 280 Epic Dungeon to supplement this.
- They are working hard to make it more fun, both in terms of story and controls.
- Union Champion Slot Expansion
- This is similar to the previous point, where these new characters are at a level where they can challenge Union Champion content so this is a good time to unlock one additional Union Champion slot.
- Maple Agit
- The new fall event will be themed around the Maple Agit, the new permanent MapleStory PC Bang that will open in October.
- There will be online and offline events for this.
- Usually, September/October has the Champion Burning events which encourage players to level up multiple side characters but this year, they want players to focus on a single character (whether that’s their main or a side character).
- Level 280 Epic Dungeon: Nightmare Wonderland
- October
- World Archive
- This is not spec-up related content, it’s story content. Internally, they called it ‘illustrative encyclopedia’ content. There’s a lot of narrative background stories in MapleStory, for NPCs, maps, items, monsters, etc. but they’re not very organized or accessible.
- Organizing these stories will help them in future IP-related ventures or game updates.
- For example, you will be able to go to a certain area to register it in the encyclopedia. You can defeat a monster to register a story about that monster.

Throughout the entire fight, you will see the Adversary’s Will, essentially this boss’ Death Count. It starts at 1000 and goes down by 200 every time you die but it can also be decreased based on the Circulation of Power pattern that happens periodically (with a timer below).
You will also see the Power of Order gauge, which can fluctuate from 0 to 1000. This gauge is extremely important because based on how high or low it is, your final damage will be increased or decreased. In addition, when the Circulation of Power pattern occurs, you will lose Adversary’s Will if your gauge is too low.
- 0-199: -40% final damage and -200 Adversary’s Will if the Circulation of Power pattern occurs.
- 200-399: -20% final damage and -100 Adversary’s Will if the Circulation of Power pattern occurs.
- 400-599: 0% final damage change
- 600-799: +10% final admage
- 800-100: +20% final damage
This ties in with the key mechanic of this boss, the Immortal Will skill which is essentially a parry. You can press the NPC Chat key to nullify the damage of the First Adversary’s attacks for 0.5 seconds (this can be used while using other skills).
If you parry specific attacks, you will acquire Proof of Order and the Immortal Will’s cooldown will be decreased by 4.5 seconds (normally a 6 second cooldown).
Therefore, you must continuously parry specific attacks with specific timing to gain Proof of Order gauge and get increased final damage.

hi max, so they changed it to genesis weapon can’t be dropped. How does one go about changing their liberated gene weapon if they open job advance?
I believe that’s what the first bullet point is for, you can talk to Nineheart to manually start the re-issue quest and replace your weapon!
Thank you max
W Max.
this was mentioned at the start but not in the actual patch notes section that you posted and it’s important enough that I ask for reiteration: kalos/kaling(all difficulty) pieces have changed to become shared among the party as of this patch right?
Yeah I believe they’re shared drops now since the (before) column specifically stated ‘per person’ but the (after) column doesn’t.
Thank you, Max.
Thanks as always Goat Max!
Buff Dual : c
this game’s doomed
W Changseop killing the game for non-whales
Decreasing pitch rates.
First removing grind stone from Easy Kalos alltogether. Now decreasing drop rate for grind stone from Normal Kalos.
Eternal nerfs. You gotta solo or duo N. Kalos to keep up with old pace.
I’m glad I don’t play kms.
kinesis getting the psychic grab delay reduced but not the actual attacking part of the skill is so funny
yep the fact that the grab itself cant be toggled off yet is crazy
w Max
can’t wait for only a fraction of these changes to hit GMS as we Go West and away from pandering to these NEET KMS whales
Hi Max, how is the KMS community feeling about the eternal piece changes in Kalos/Kaling?
Can’t speak for everyone but it’s kind of necessary. Kalos/Kaling Eternal prices were going down the gutter (in Luna they were 800m each and still dropping). It wasn’t even worth spending any money on CRA gear since you could just wear 10 star Eternals and it would be cheaper and better. They wanted to stop the CKalos bussing and also lower the overall supply of Eternals (which is why I think they did it this way instead of just adding the red dot system from Reboot) and I think they’re meeting their goal with this.
Way more people are angry about the Black Heart removal lol
How about the pitch rate reduction and boss entry limit?
Were the market full of eternals because of the “bus” behaviors? Is the “bus” some guild free carries, or they simply hire mules and collect the pieces/crystal meso back afterwards??
Pretty similar situation to Eternals, pitched boss drops were becoming super worthless because everyone has so many CTene mules now that every event basically gives you a free one.
Our Power Crystal limit was already 12 per week so the boss entry thing doesn’t change much for us. In fact it saves us time because for example, I’m clearing up to Baldrix and I still had to run Damien just for the chance at an Eyepatch while dropping the crystal since I couldn’t sell it. For every new boss they’re adding after that (including Adversary), it would just knock off another boss’ Crystal and make it kind of a waste of time.
Yeah Changsup said 40% of Eternals generateed from CKalos were made by people doing <5% of the damage. Not sure what the actual party comps were but I bet it was something like 6 strong players split into solo/duos and then fill the rest of the slots with the other players’ alts. Everyone can keep everything that drops because its even but it generates multiple more Eternals per week for free.
The main problem with 12 weekly bosses limit would be Achievement and Monster Collection hunters are being forced to use weak mules to clear boss counts for achievements. In addition for monster collection hunters, boss summons are part of the collection list so they will have more troubles using non-main characters to hunt. It’s irrational considerations for these group of people.
Hey Max, thanks for the translation! I don’t understand the part about them removing your “Character Friends”. Is this the same thing as “Account Friends” in GMS? Where adding a friend will automatically add all their alts to that friend slot? I don’t understand them wanting to remove your existing Character Friends. Surely they don’t expect us to remember and re-add all our current friends…any clarification would be helpful, thanks!
‘Character Friends’ is the old way of adding people where it would just add the single characer, ‘Account Friends’ is the new (well its been there for a long time) way where you add their whole account. They’re removing the old one completely (and Changseop said if you had any remaining that you want to save, you can contact Nexon Support and they’ll do their best to connect you with your friend since they’ll still have access to the logs).
Thank you goat Max
“MapleStory is a game where the ultimate goal is to defeat the highest difficulty boss with the fewest number of party members.”
So playing maplestory doesn’t give you anything, even friends.
hey max
I got a question
If the all cure Potions slot increase to 100k
There is a way to buy all cure Potions from the shop in alcaster in el Nath from that quest for 400 meso, but the problem is u can buy only 100 per time, y does kms doesn’t change that we can buy bigger amount from alcaster shop? Tell it to the kms director
So tthen i just need to go to temple of time to buy it there for 8k ea? That so bad
Quite some nerfs no?
Hi Max!
In regard to the Hurricane skill changes, does it mean that the skill will cut out while you’re actively using the skill and standing in place
or
Does it mean spamming the skill button while standing in place will result in the skill not activating similar to other non-hurricane skills?
I tested it out and if you hold down Hurricane too long without moving, it will just stop hitting mobs untl you move again.
They nerf everyone and everything and tell you they’re doing YOU a favor (because they let you spend more to make up for the damage loss!!!)
tldr maplestory=solo game? no place for f2p
Hi Max, the Black Heart removal is we cant obtain the Damaged Black Heart from Lotus anymore, but how about the existing Damaged Black Heart? Can we still exchange with NPC?
Yes you can still exchange Damaged Black Hearts you got from before this patch
thank you Max
