KMST ver. 1.2.186 – Huge Skill Changes and UI Reorganization!

Following up on the March update that surprised everyone with the Star Force reorganization, Director Changseop has followed it up with another huge off season patch (and a Maple Now stream like usual). This time, it was a full skill balancing that changes all classes to 2 minute cycles and updating most of the game’s UIs! It also includes the Maple Home system (KMS’ version of the overseas My Home system) which I’ve been asking for for so many years and a big update to the MVP system.

This patch will be coming to the official server next week which could bring some additional changes. It starts off the MapleStory 22nd anniversary: Maple University, and I’ll cover that event in the next post.

Maple Now (25.04.10)

Changsup said that this Maple Now stream for the April update would be one of the longest with the most amount of content, and it even feels like a mini showcase.

Combat Experience Improvements

  • They focused on two main directions.
    • 1. Unify all jobs’ skill cycles to 120 seconds.
      • This has been a topic of discussion for a long time. They said previously that there’s no ‘right answer’ to this and each cycle had its own benefits and drawbacks.
      • In the end, they thought that the synergy effect of unifying all skill cycles would be more fun than the value of the diversity of different jobs having different cycles.
      • From now on, all battles will be using this 2 minute cycle. And in terms of party composition, there will be more freedom than before as all classes will be able to party together without having to worry about not matching up.
      • Together with this change, skill rings’ cooldowns have been changed to 2 minutes and their effects changed accordingly.
    • 2. Removing the gap between theoretical combat performance and actual performance.
      • For a lot of jobs, there are specific strategies where “if you do this, you can do the most damage” but in actual combat situations, it’s often not easy to do those things perfectly. This led to a big difference between theoretical and actual combat performance. They wanted to alleviate this issue by adjusting difficulty or structural problems with the following three main points.
        • Adding Rush skills.
        • Adding invinciblity skills/status effect immunity and damage reduction effects to keydown burst skills.
        • Improving skills that had high skill usage difficulty.
      • A rush skill has been added to all jobs that use jumping as their basic movement technique (not Teleport classes) that did not already have them. This lets you move short distances quickly. Teleport classes could easily move left and right but jump classes had to worry about distance or momentum, so they added rushes to reduce this gap.
      • They worked on reducing the gap in skill usage safety. An invincibility skill has been added to jobs that did not already have them. In addition, for keydown burst skills, they have added status effect immunity and damage reduction to make them more consistent and safe to use.
      • They adjusted jobs that had skills that were hard to use or had poor synergy with their other skills. Previously, they thought these ‘difficulties’ were job-specific control elements so they kept them but if they were too hard to use properly or didn’t have good synergy, they decided they were problematic elements and changed them.
        • For example, Mercedes’ Sylphidia was a mount skill that didn’t work with her movement skills has been changed into an instant use skill.
        • Or Mechanic’s robots which had to be installed in specific ways to deal the maximum damage have been changed to regular summons to improve situations like where the boss moved and you lost damage.
        • Battle Mage’s Black Magic Altar has been changed from a skill that attacks in a line through the installed altars to just shooting out orbs from a single spot.
      • In addition, things like 100% uptime summons or debuffs that had cooldowns no longer have them. They also removed the restriction when using skills too many times in a single spot without moving in boss battles.
    • In terms of performance and numerical adjustments, this time they were more comprehensive in these changes and they worked on making all jobs closer to the median. According to their calcuations, the deviation range has been decreased greatly compared to before.
    • However, these changes come together with the skill cycle changes and skill mechanics/logic changes, so it may be difficult to understand how much stronger or weaker they are just from the number changes. Players who were used to 3 minute bursts may take some time to get used to 2 minute bursts, and each job will take time to get accustomed to their skill logic changes.

Content Reward Adjustments

  • They have adjusted the rewards from bosses and Azmoth Canyon content to match their current diffficulty and the increasing update tempo of the game.
  • There have been a lot of changes recently that have made players stronger and bosses easier much more quickly, including things like 6th job skills, Hexa Stat, Challengers World and Item Burning, Skill Sequences, guild skill changes, boss changes in the last patch, the skill cycle changes in this patch, etc.
  • Due to the these changes, they need do make adjustments in areas, specifically mesos, where rewards are based on the strength of the character.
  • Intense Power Crystals were last changed since January of last year, but since then, bosses have become easier and players have become much stronger. The meso rewards were somewhat lacking when compared to their difficulty and didn’t match the changed tempo of updates so the prices have been adjusted.
  • He showed a table that showed the weekly meso production from different sources.
    • Red = boss rewards (Intense Power Crystals), pink = grinding, light blue = Azmoth Gold Coins, dark blue = non-Azmoth Coins, grey = etc.
    • You can see it jumped significantly after the New Age update and Next update. Of course, the other sources have also increased such as from grinding after the New Age update, and Gold Coins from content like Epic Dungeons, but the mesos from boss rewards has increased much faster than other sources.
  • He then showed a table that showed from which segment of bosses the mesos from boss rewards were coming from.
    • Dark purple = Chaos Zakum ~ Normal Dunkel, light purple = Hard Suu ~ Hard Black Mage, Red = Normal Seren ~ Easy Kaling, pink = Normal Kalos and above.
    • You can see that specifically, the amount of mesos coming from the middle segment of Hard Suu~Hard Black Mage has been increasing significantly. In March 2023, the amount of mesos from Chaos Zakum~Normal Dunkel was more than double the mesos from Hard Suu~Hard Black Mage, but now the situation has completely reversed.
    • This shows the gap between the difficulty level and meso rewards.
  • He showed the average time for new players to clear Hard Suu.
    • In Dreamer, it took about 53.5 days for a new player to defeat Hard Suu. In Milestone, that went down to 43.5 days. In Next, that went down to 33.9 days, which is a 37% decrease compared to Dreamer.
    • Of course, this alone doesn’t fully reflect the content difficulty as there are multiple factors. But it is clear that the difficulty of these boss monsters has been greatly decreased over time.
  • If they do not adjust the meso rewards from bosses based on their difficulty, in the current situation, meso value will drastically decrease and will have a huge effect on the value of your gameplay.
  • Basically, bosses at Hard Jin Hilla and below have had their crystal prices decreased by about 30%. For bosses at Normal Seren and above, they have had their crystal prices increased by 30%~80% (the range is bigger as these bosses need to produce more mesos).
  • Previously, they changed prices gradually week by week but this time, they will be making large changes all at once. There are benefits to both methods but they thought that it would be better for players if they didn’t have to worry about prices increasing/decreasing the next week, when it would stop changing, etc. and that given the current situation, it would be hard to make smaller changes over a long period of time.
  • In addition, Azmoth Canyon (Hard)’s final damage reduction has been increased from 90% to 95% so you will have to be slightly stronger to be able to get the full meso reward.
  • These changes probably should have been made at the same time as the content updates that gave players more power or made bosses easier, but they didn’t do it at those times so they are a little late in changing them to match the current difficulty levels. It will be a bit of a negative experience for players in the short term but it is something that they have to do to maintain their current content update speed and quicker game changes.

UI Reorganization

  • This is an update that they knew they had to do for a long time and have been preparing for a while. People who play MapleStory regularly may not find the current UI very inconvenient but for players who return after a long time or are playing it for the first time, the UI could be much better and more intuitive.
  • As a disclaimer, he said that not everything has been changed in this patch. Due to their schedules and such, there are some old UIs still in the game mixed with the new UI but they will update them as soon as possible going forward.
  • The world select screen’s resolution has been set to 1366×768. 800×600 and 1024×768 resolutions have been removed. The new UI reorganization has new elements that would not fit in these older resolutions so they decided to make them history.
  • They added an Easy Connect feature that lets you quickly login to the character you set as your Favourite or the last character you logged into, without having to choose a world then channel then character.
  • The Character Select screen has also been expanded to match the new resolution. You can also change the background now between the day or night theme. They are preparing more backgrounds for more customization.
  • The Character Creation screen has been greatly updated. This in particular was focused on new/returning players as the old one was pretty confusing. You can see all MapleStory jobs at a glance, including the later job advancements (e.g. instead of only an ‘Adventurer’ option, you can see all 4th job Adventurer classes separately).
  • The main game UI has been updated. The character name and level are now displayed in the bottom left. The HP/MP/gauge display has been changed, and the Quick Slots have greater customization now (you can change the number of columns and align them left or right).
  • The Full Menu UI has been added to show all relevant features in a single window. New/returning players can open this menu to check all of MapleStory’s features in a single glance. You can also customize the buttons that appear in your Quick Menu beside your HP/MP bar.
  • The icons on the left side of the screen are actually a unique part of MapleStory’s UI, a lot of games don’t have stuff like that. They cleaned it up a bit (e.g. the Scheduler has been moved to the Quick Menu). They kept the Quests/Events because it’s so familiar to players. They also added a Checklist window which saves the notifications you get during the game. Before, if you didn’t check right away, it was hard to look at them later but now, they will be saved in this UI for you to check at your convenience.
  • You can also claim mileage from defeating bosses through the Scheduler now.
  • The Dimensional Mirror UI has been changed to allow you to use Cross World Boss Content, Dimensional Library, and the party quest map.
  • The equipment window has been updated with a new layout, accessories on the left and armor on the right.
  • The pet window has been updated so you can do things like set the potion settings without having to open the settings window, and right click pets to see the pet skills they have.
  • The Decoration inventory has been separated into three tabs for equipment, Androids, and Damage Skins. You can do things like search for specific Damage Skins. This area will need more work but for now, these are the changes they made.
  • The inventory UI has been changed, including a larger size and a search feature. They replaced the small icons with bigger icons with text to make them more intuitive rather than having to guess which button did what. A new ‘Bag’ UI has been added to make it easy to see all of your bags and what’s inside them.
  • You can now disassemble items even if you’re not in Meisterville.
  • The Decoration tab of the inventory has been increased to 256 slots, and they added a button to increase the inventory size to show all slots at once. You can filter and sort your Decoration tab items based on the type of equipment or item Label.
  • Item tooltips have been greatly updated.
    • It shows the number of times it has been scrolled, the value/level of each flame stat, and the tier of each potential line. People who know MapleStory already knew these things intuitively but for beginners, it was completely unknown. You can now see things like each flame stat tier and if you rolled a prime line on potential.
  • Required stats for equipment have been removed (except level). They also removed Durability (a relic of the past), special tooltips, etc. to make the UI cleaner.
  • The Equipment Enhancement UI has been updated. Similar to the Full Menu before, they gathered all of MapleStory’s enhancement systems into a single UI.
    • Star Force
      • Star Catch doesn’t speed up anymore, he said it didn’t make sense that enhancing your items would get harder/change based on your ‘skill’. They thought of removing it but that would affect item value so they decided to just do this.
      • You can Star Force completely just by pressing the Spacebar, no need to align various windows and click repeatedly anymore.
    • Scrolling
      • The UI directly displays the Scrolls that can be used on the item from your inventory so you don’t have to find them in your inventory and drag/drop anymore.
      • Golden Hammers have been removed. All items will have the extra slot by default now.
      • Return Scrolling required you to use the Return Scroll on the item first then use a scroll, which sometimes people forgot and was inconvenient. Now, whenever you use a scroll, it has the option of applying a Return Scroll if you have it.
    • Bonus Stats
      • The practically meaningless level 150 and lower flames have been removed.
    • Potential
    • Additional Potential
    • Exceptional Enhancements
    • Soul Weapon
    • Trace Restore
    • Special Skill Ring Polishing

MVP System

  • This system has been updated for the first time in a long time. The rewards/benefits did not match the current game environment so they wanted to adjust it.
  • The criteria for each rank has been changed, and MVP Black has been added. MVP Bronze used to be a permanent rank but it has been changed to be the same as the others.
  • Previously, there was a Gift Pack on the 1st/11th/21st of every month and the Special Pack on the 1st of every month. They have changed it to a neat weekly/monthly benefit system.
  • Each rank has additional items, changed quantities, and new items.
    • For example, 3x/4 Experience Coupons, MVP 70% Additional Experience Coupons, and the new MVP Resort which is an afk map with the same experience benefits as the VIP Sauna.
  • The rank benefits have been updated as well, such as permanent Spell Trace Fever Time for MVP Gold and above, and being able to potential reset/flame items 3x at once. The intention was reduce the time it takes to cube/flame an item. It might not be a complete benefit as you might roll 2 really good options together so it would be kind of a waste, and they wondered if it would be right to give this benefit but rather than worrying about these edge cases, they decided to add it anyway.
  • Starting from MVP Red, you can ‘free one character from homework’ with features that let you instantly complete Symbol dailies/weeklies and instantly clear Monster Park, Monster Park Extreme, and Epic Dungeons.
  • For this update, they wanted to remove the items that didn’t fit the current game and provide benefits to players, not just in terms of quantity of items but also in terms of time.

Maple Home

  • A new housing content where you can customize and decorate your own home.
  • While it uses a lot of resources from the overseas version of My Home, it is completely different content in terms of design and role.
  • To put it simply, it is a place where you can visually display your achievements. You will receive furniture by completing events, game content, and achievements, then you can arrange them in your home. Another important part is the sense of community, where you can invite up to 30 players to your home to hang out (this can increase in the future).
  • There will be special furniture such as the display case that lets you show off your equipment to other players. There’s also mannequins you can dress up and show off your cash items. There’s also a minigame furniture that lets you play One Card. For the April update, that’s the only minigame but they will definitely try to add all of the minigames that MapleStory has so you can enjoy them with your friends.
  • They want to add more pieces of special furniture, but for this patch, they focused on adding the system in general.
  • You can change your home’s theme, but right now it’s just Blue or Orange Mushroom. They will be adding more themes and expand the house to give more space.

Events

  • They are giving out a Hyper Burning Booster (applying Hyper Burning MAX). It’s been some time since the Winter events ended so they wanted to give it out for the Spring. The duration is a little bit shorter though because it has to end before the summer update.
  • The Haste MAX event will return after a long time. It gives additional benefits while hunting, including a new benefit that gives 2x Sol Erda from hunting. You can defeat 50k/100k/200k monsters to receive a chair, Damage Skin, and temp stats title.
  • The main event is MapleStory’s 22nd anniversary: Maple University.
    • It’s a colourful monster campus concept.
    • You can complete Basic and In-Depth Lectures to receive credits for rewards.
  • They will be holding an offline event: Pink Bean’s National Campus Tour. The MapleStory team will visit regions across Korea with various events and gifts. It’s not just campuses and non-university students can of course join, that’s just the theme to match the in-game event.

Conclusion

  • The May patch won’t be as big as this April patch, but it won’t have nothing. Also, traditionally in May, they talk about the summer update a bit which they’re hard at work at right now.
  • He apologized for the changes they made to the Golden Octopus event for its second round. He made a last minute change because he wanted to make it a more meaningful challenge but now he feels like he made a mistake. It was supposed to be a fun event but it made players sad when they lost the chance to get rewards. If it ever returns, they will definitely improve on the event.
