Maple Memories: My MapleStory Journey
Hey guys, this post will be a little different from my usual stuff. Since it’s KMS’ 18th anniversary, GMS’ 16th anniversary, and also (almost) the 10th anniversary of this blog, I thought it would be nice to take a trip down memory lane! I’ve been playing MapleStory for more than half my life and obviously, it’s been a huge part of it haha.
I started playing MapleStory in middle school, around 2006-2007 I think (please excuse my extremely cringey name). I spent all my free time doing random stuff like exploring Leafre at level 19 with my friends…
Hunting at Pig Beach…
Meeting GMs… dying to Mushmom in Kerning City…
Having to sit on The Relaxer to heal HP/MP while doing basically anything because potions were too expensive…
Finally spending money to change my name. Remember when you had to wait until the next server check for it to work?
I really wish I had more screenshots from back then but I must have either not taken many or just lost them. I actually only found these by looking at my old Photobucket account lol. I think I had more on Tinypic but it looks like that site got taken down.
The Cygnus Knights were released in KMS in December 2008 and I remember seeing videos and screenshots of people playing them which made me want to try them, so I decided to make an account. I think it was around the summer of 2009 specifically since I started right before Aran came out, which was July 2009.
Again I think I lost some of my early screenshots, this one’s from December 2010 so it’s a while after I joined. I was in the EllinForest guild with a lot of other foreigners, and I’m actually friends with some of them to this day!
Here’s a bunch of nostalgia filled screenshots. Summoning Rombots in Monster Carnival, PvP, fighting Zakum in a big party, my 4th job advancement, grinding in Lion King’s Castle with party play, the Family system, doing Monster Park in a party, and getting the 8th anniversary medal (from 2011!).
Look at how many worlds there were during the Tempest update!
Got my first 200 in March 2013!
Is that THE iSlingGunz?! (December 2013)
This character eventually got to level 239 but I lost access to it so I restarted on a Naver account (like a lot of other people).
This character got a lot further, we ended up being able to do Hard mode bosses and on our first Hard Lucid clear, we got a Dreamy Belt!
This time I got to level 250 as well 🙂 Unfortunately, the Naver channeling service ended their partnership with Nexon and so most of us lost our accounts…
But because I’m addicted, I restarted one more time LOL. Since I didn’t want to sell my Bowmaster’s gear but I wanted a change, I decided to play a Wind Breaker. I started this character in November 2020 and I hit level 250 on it last month (thanks to exp curves and the compensation level up potions).
I’ve progressed the furthest on this character, I just soloed Hard Suu for the first time and I’m trying to solo Hard Demian soon as well.
Honestly with all the power creep, random buffs, and other stuff, I’m hoping I can actually get a Genesis weapon in the future but we’ll see how that goes!
Now about the blog! My first post ever was for the party quest revamp back in May 2011, which is almost 10 years ago! I don’t think it was super popular until about a month later, when they announced the summer update, MapleStory Legend!
Two of the most popular posts of all time were the MapleStory RED and MapleStory V updates’ first patches. The total number of views of the blog until today is actually almost 45 million!
Honestly I didn’t expect the site to get as popular as it did. I actually barely knew any Korean at the beginning, other than being able to read it (which is actually quite easy since Hangul was literally designed to be easy to learn). I spent a lot of time looking at Google Translate, trying to read things myself to fix obvious mistakes, and testing/double checking myself in-game to make sure.
Of course, over the years, my Korean has improved an immense amount, and I even took classes at university. I wouldn’t say I’m fluent at all but in terms of MapleStory related information, I don’t have many issues haha. I remember Eunwol was particularly difficult though since its skills all used Hanja which I had no idea how to translate.
Fun fact: my most viewed video on my YouTube channel is actually a random training video on Mikhail when it first came out in KMST in March 2012. Why? No idea.
So basically, MapleStory has been and will always be a huge part of my life. I’ve made so many friends and great memories thanks to it and it even motivated me to learn a new language! I started in middle school and since then, I’ve graduated high school, university, and now I’m working full time. Not sure how long I’ll continue to write this blog or even play the game, but I’m still having fun (most of the time).
I know a lot of people have been reading my posts for a long time, so thanks for your support over the years. I’m sure you guys also have a lot of memories from playing the game. With all the controversy the past few months, I thought it would be nice to think back on why I continue to enjoy MapleStory.
It’s definitely been a tough year but I hope everyone has been trying to make the best of it! Anyways, we now return to your regularly scheduled content of patch notes and apologies from Won-ki.
Thanks Max! Always appreciate you providing posts for the next update. Keep up the good work!
Let’s goooo Max! Been reading basically every time you post something and even though I don’t always comment, I’m glad to know you’re still keeping up the good work. Your work is one of the reasons why I still keep up with MapleStory. Thank you for everything you’ve done c:
Wholesome post OwO
We appreciate you taking the time to provide us information for the next update in KMS, Max!
Great post Max. Thanks for taking me down memory lane. Hope you’re still doing well!
Thank you so much for all your hard work, Max ! Time flies so fast ! Even when I took breaks from Maple I always checked your website. The time and effort you put into translating all the patch notes is extremely appreciated !^__^ I hope you continue to enjoy Maple and hopefully MapleStory actually improves and goes in the right direction. I just want to let you know that it’s okay to take breaks and not force yourself to translate everything right away. Your health comes first :).
You know what’s funny ? I always assumed that you’re Korean (Korean American or Korean Canadian ?)xD. Out of curiosity, are you Korean, Max ?
Haha nope I’m not Korean, I think a lot of people assumed that I am though. I guess it makes sense because who else would spend 10 years translating Korean 2d mushroom game patch notes LOL
I’ve started MapleStory since 2005,but I started to play the first oversea server in 2015.
I first joined CMST in 2014, which I started to share preview information through media.
In 2018 December, thanks to my taiwanese friend, I completed reverification and started to play TMS. But sadly, my CMST account discontinued in 2019 August because of the unspoken rule.
In 2020 Febuary, I finally successfully logged in MSEA after lots of attempts, a month later, I also completed KMS registration with my passport. The last puzzle JMS got cleared soon as well a few months later. Thererfore I foot into all regions and could shares things if there is update. However, in 2020 December KMS got discontinued due to Naver termination, and in late September my booster ip for MSEA is blocked.
Keeping sharing news is a tough job, hope you can persist as MapleStory doesn’t die.
Damn max you’re an old man now
👴
You’re making me feel old… ;___;
Great post. Sometimes I think it’s crazy we are still playing this game, but after everything we went through and how much time we spent in it… It feels like a home. Even though the game has changed and evolved so much, it’s still a comfort zone for many of us.
Thank you so much for your high quality posts over the years. They’ve helped me a lot, mostly with events. And it’s so great you’re building a timeline of Maple history too.
I wish Nexon acknowledged everything you did for the Maple community and gave you at least free merch or something, lol.
And finally, thanks for being such a good friend!
😊
King
Been using your site for kms updates since 2015. Thanks for your service
Thanks 1337b0wman
Damn, nostalgia hit hard.
Thanks mate for doing such a great job – I love reading your blog even though I stopped playing around Root Abyss release. Fantastic content you make here, thanks for it! You real MapleStory legend.
I’ve been following you since 2008 and I and so thrilled to know you’ve kept going even after I’ve stopped. I still come around to read your posts because of much of a huge part you played in my life.
Thank you.
fist bump?
I loved seeing these nostalgic images so much. Although many people want to go back, I don’t think the game was necessarily better back then. We were just more innocent. But it’s nice looking back and feeling a sense of innocence again.
Anyway, thanks a lot, Max. You do a lot for the community. I’m glad you can still find enjoyment in it all.
I’ve been playing MapleStory for so long aswell, started since 2008 on EMS and ever since I’ve come across this site I’ve been keeping tabs on what patches would come out on KMS so I had a general idea of what I could get excited for. Even during the times I was on hiatus I still came back to this site to check if anything interesting would be released in KMS that would get me back to playing Maple again lol. Thanks for the many years of community service, keep it up!
woow loved this post! so many memories of the past, I keep being amazed at how much the game has changed over the years, it could’ve gone so much different, the points of difficulty still are there (talk about so many hours of fun lol) I just made a Dawn Warrior…I wish I could be more constant with my characters over the years like you are… but I’ve enjoyed a different class every year(love reboot) I was so glad I found your blog after spadow quit or whatever lol thank you so much!
I still frequently visit your blog to stay up to date on this game, even though I haven’t played in years! XD
If it’s any consolation your blog is probably one of the last few big Maplestory ones since basilmarket/ southperry has died and spadow left. Anytime there’s a KMS update I always google orange mushroom first since it’s always organized well and it perfectly summarizes everything.
Excellent share, Max. I’m glad that you’ve stuck around to inform us about KMS goings-on, despite the ups and downs. Having played Maple for more than half my life as well makes it feel a bit weird, since all of the people I know in real life that played in the past have quit years ago.
Thank you for this post.
thank you so much for your hard work!
Been here since practically the beginning and didn’t even realize it. Time flies! Congratulations on almost ten years! I don’t play maple anymore but i habitually check this blog to see how my old obsession is doing these days. Thanks for making this blog and I hope you continue tm enjoy it into the future!
Thanks for sharing. We appreciate you and all the work you’ve done.
Amazing job and your blogs are always a great window to what’s to come.
You’re amazing, seriously ❤
I bet most of all global/Eu Maplers followed your blog posts as THE primary source.
Gracias por todo lo que haces saludos desde Perú, capaz ni conozcas ese pais xD
Always will check-up regularly on this blog for anything KMS related, ever since Mercedes! Keep it up, Max! You’re doing a saint’s job!
A very emotional post! it’s nice to see you have old photos! I lost all of mine sadly. I wish I had photos from back in the day when Cody was having these bbq quests, independence day hats, and valentine roses!
Hey thanks for the posts man! appreciate all the translations you do.
Hope you will be playing this game and writing this blog for a long time to come
It is a good memory for all of us to play our life in maplestory world. But for still shit cms server, now i play in tms server to get so many goals that i can’t reach in cms server. i got 275 just last month, and at this month i decide to solo black mage, now i think i will get success soon.
Max,
I’ve been reading this blog for the past 10 or so years. Have been an avid Maplestory fan as well. I still remember all the hype around Cygnus Knights when they were first released, haha. I watched my older brother play this game, then I played it myself throughout middle school and slowly died down in highschool. I’m in college now as a sophomore. While I don’t play anymore, seldom, I listen to the music and always give this blog a check to see whats up. Always a pleasure to see this blog updating. Hope life is going well for you. The old photos are nice to see as well. Keep up the good work! Time flies, huh.
Love your site, i too have played since around the same time you did, not exactly sure which version since it was so long ago! I discovered your site during RED so i am one of those 45million 😛 Have been an avid reader since, Keep it up my dude!
